Britain’s youngest ever lottery winner has shared her biggest regret after becoming a millionaire and then going bankrupt.
Back in 2003, 16-year-old Callie Rogers was working as a shop assistant in her local Co-op and earning just £3.60 an hour when she decided to take part in the National Lottery.
Little did she know that her life would change forever at this moment.
A winning a huge £1.875 million lead to Callie becoming Britain’s youngest ever jackpot success.

In the years that followed, Callie enjoyed a whirlwind shopping spree, splashing out half a million on homes for herself, family and friends as well as dropping an additional £550k on clothes, tattoos and travelling.
However, the teenager would also discover the devastating reality about winning the lottery – which is that a lot of people show up out of the woodwork hoping to cash in on your good fortune.
Callie also gave generous loans – some as much as £20,000 – to friends and family who wanted in on the lavish lifestyle. She also developed an expensive cocaine habit, spending around £250,000 on the class A drug.
“I liked being able to help my family and doing stuff for people I cared about, but I wanted to just go back to work and live my normal life again,” she said in 2019.
“People asked for money for new cars and I would help out. I was a soft touch. Now I realise what they were like.
“I was exploited because of my age. I had a lot of fake relationships.”
This wasn’t the first time Callie had opened up on how the greedy actions of others impacted her, explaining during an appearance on this morning that she’d also developed ‘trust issues’.
“Not knowing who liked me for me, and having all the stress of all the money…I just wanted to go back to having a normal life,” she added.
Nearly two decades on and Callie works as a carer, after going back to school and retraining.
According to an interview she gave to The Sun last year, she lives with her children in a £400-a-month house in Workington and makes sure she can buy them ‘a few treats’ at the end of the month.
However, her one biggest regret is not saving any of her winnings, which she could have used to support her son with cerebral palsy.
“It’s my one big regret is that the money isn’t here for Blake,” she said.
“He loves sensory stimulation. If I had that money, I’d give him the biggest sensory room you could buy.”

According to Britain’s youngest ever lottery winner, there’s a lot of truth behind the phrase ‘money can’t buy you happiness’ – as she’s much more content 20 years later after frittering it all away.
Callie Rogers became the envy of every teenager in the UK back in 2003 when she scooped a whopping £1.875 million with her lucky ticket at the age of 16.
At the time, she was working as a shop assistant in her local Co-op for just £3.60 an hour… so it’s safe to say her win was pretty life-changing.
Callie’s been on quite the rollercoaster ride since bagging the jackpot more than two decades ago, and in hindsight, she reckons living a ‘normal life’ is much better than being a high roller.
In an update shared on social media last month, she announced that she had given birth to her fifth child, according to The Sun.
She shared a string of snaps of her five-week-old tot named Navie-Nicola on Facebook, alongside the caption: “The best five weeks of life loving you our little bean.”
Callie also dubbed the new addition her ‘precious girl’ in another sweet upload.
The publication also reported that the Brit has now found love with a new man, 35-year-old Lee Matthews.
Callie seems much more content with her current circumstances after the turbulent few years which followed her huge win on the lottery.

After claiming her grand prize in 2003, Callie spent half a million on homes for herself and her loved ones, as well as an additional £550k on clothes, tattoos and travelling.
But it seemed as though the rest of her windfall might have been burning a hole in her pocket, as Callie then went on another spending spree as she booked herself in for a string of cosmetic surgeries.
The lotto winner, from Workington, Cumbria, also admitted that she splurged £250,000 on a cocaine habit, while she lost thousands by bunging family and friends ‘loans’ which were never repaid.
Callie, now aged 37, previously told how she was ‘a soft touch’ and was often taken advantage of by gold diggers who just wanted to cash in on her good fortune.
“Now I realise what they were like,” she said. “I was exploited because of my age. I had a lot of fake relationships.”
During an appearance on This Morning in 2018, Callie explained that her millionaire status brought a lot of ‘trust issues’ along with it, as she couldn’t work out who was genuine.

“Not knowing who liked me for me, and having all the stress of all the money…I just wanted to go back to having a normal life,” Callie said.
Unfortunately though, her notoriety as Britain’s youngest ever lottery winner continued to follow her – even 16 years later when she was working as a carer for £12k a year while renting a £500-a-month pad.
“People still ask me about the lottery win all the time,” Callie told the Mirror in 2019. “You are only 16, with all that responsibility. At that age, you can get the best advice ever.
“But you are not in a position to listen. I was too young. Overnight, I went from carefree child to adult.
“All these years on, it still gets dragged up. Even when I go for job interviews, I am thinking about it. I suffer from such bad anxiety when I am going to meet new people.
“It preys on my mind, what a new partner’s family will think of me, or even new friends. I still get abuse just because of who I am.”

Essentially, the former shop assistant reckons that although winning the jackpot right after leaving school sounds like a dream come true to most people, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
She continued: “I did not want that much money. I was in foster care and for the first time in a long time, I was really settled and really happy.
“At 16 you do not know what is ahead of you, because by God, I did not expect any of that. I asked the Co-op if I could have my old job back.”
Callie felt so strongly about this that she called on ministers to raise the age limit for the National Lottery to 18 or over, so that other teens didn’t have to go through her ordeal.
The minimum age was brought up in 2021, and the mum now simply hopes that none of her kids will ever try their luck on it.
Camelot, who used to own the National Lottery, previously said they had offered Callie ‘extensive support’ over the years.
A spokesman said: “She didn’t take up the independent financial and legal advice offered by us.
“However, our winner’s team fully supported her and helped her to handle media interest. We will continue to support Callie in any way we can if she wants.”

![Lottery winner who won staggering prize money ‘was lost for words’ after spotting mistake that doubled her winnings](https://images.ladbible.com/resize?type=webp&quality=70&width=3840&fit=contain&gravity=auto&url=https://images.ladbiblegroup.com/v3/assets/bltcd74acc1d0a99f3a/blt02c6f1eec7bd31ac/66c1c9c6bd310b3e28d8b4ad/lottery-winner-prize-doubled.png)
A woman ended up claiming a double lottery jackpot earlier this year after she made a mistake and didn’t realise it until much later.
Earlier this year the People’s Postcode Lottery picked a Telford address to win their weekly million quid prize, with every winning ticket bagging a £125,000 jackpot.
A total of seven people got a portion of the prize winnings and had all sorts of ideas what to spend the money on.
One family reckons it’ll help them move house, an elderly couple wanted to convert their van so they could use it to go on ‘retirement adventures’ and there was also a trip to Walt Disney World in the offing for another family on the street.
However, local resident Elise ended up getting a surprise as her winnings were £250,000, twice what everyone else was getting.
![She accidentally signed up twice, so when she won the lottery she got double winnings. “I joined the Postcode Lottery in December, but I accidentally signed up with two tickets,” she said at the time of her winnings, explaining where her double jackpot had come from.
“Next day I got two emails saying that I’d signed up twice, but I never got round to cancelling it until a week or two ago.
“The timing’s been right because I’ve still won with two tickets. But I feel like my dad’s always around me, that he’s my guardian angel and he’s the reason that this has happened.
“He was my best friend and unfortunately at the end of May last year I lost him to cancer. He battled it for more than two years, but he lost his fight and left a big hole in my heart.
“I thought it had to be my dad. I was his baby. He was a lot like that when he was alive. He would help me when he could.
“It’s sad that he’s not here to celebrate with me. But I like to think that he’s celebrating with me in spirit.”

With £250,000 to spend, Elise reckoned she might want to put some of that money towards her first holiday in 10 years and possibly getting herself a new car.
Responding to her win she said: “Oh my God! This is going to help so much. I’m lost for words. I would have been happy with a couple of grand, to be honest. I’m shaking. It’s unimaginable.
“I’ve not been on holiday for 10 years. Anywhere is fine. Even Wales would be fine. The only holiday I’ve ever had abroad was Greece. I loved that, so I might go to Greece again. But I wouldn’t mind trying Benidorm.
“I never really treat myself. My kind of treat is a new Hoover. But I might even get a new car now.”

A married couple from Coventry who won the lottery seven years ago revealed there is one thing they miss about their old life.
Rather than an extension on their holiday, Bill, 64, and Cath Mullarkey, 63, returned from St Lucia to a very special message, telling them they had won £1 million in the National Lottery in 2017.
“I thought it must be something like, ‘this could be you if you play tonight’, but no, the lady said, ‘congratulations, you’re the proud winner of the EuroMillions, £1 million’ and that was it,” Bill told the PA news agency.

“It was life-changing, but it took time to sink in. Even for a day or two, it was surreal. I’m thinking maybe we’ll get a call back saying it’s a mistake, but no.
“When you see it’s all signed, sealed, delivered and then that’s reality when you see your bank account with zeros, wow.”
With all that money at their disposal, the duo decided to live out their dream by moving to St Lucia.
After already owning a plot of land on the Caribbean island, they have now built a home and their very own restaurant.
“We always thought of having our own place and ideally open our own little restaurant,” Bill added.

“We never thought it would happen but we dreamed and then that was the priority, that and help family members.
“We had got to that age in life where we thought it’d never be possible or we would be fortunate enough to think, ‘where do we really want to settle down’, and for me, it was a no brainer.”
Their restaurant, which opened in November 2023, is surrounded by mountain views and serves St Lucian food.
Although they do miss, what they call the ‘beautiful’ Coventry, the couple’s lives have now changed for the better.
“We were happy before, but we are even happier now, knowing that we have this,” Bill said.

“I’m grateful every day of my life and so is Cath, for the change that it’s managed to bring us
“What we’re doing now is for ourselves and living our dream, doing our thing, which we dreamt of, but never thought would be possible, so it has changed our life for the better.”
Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, St Lucia covers about 617 square kilometres.
The island has a population of roughly 180,000 and is home to its famous twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons.

A lottery winner who won a whopping £11million on the lottery has died at the age of 73.
Paul Maddison and his then-business partner Mark Gardiner scooped a tidy amount in 1995 after their lucky numbers came up, securing them the huge jackpot.
The pair split their winnings – which totalled more than £22million – straight down the middle, becoming overnight millionaires.
![Lottery winner Paul Maddison has passed away.](https://images.ladbible.com/resize?type=webp&quality=70&width=3840&fit=contain&gravity=auto&url=https://images.ladbiblegroup.com/v3/assets/bltcd74acc1d0a99f3a/blt9027988090d34138/65797e15f8c2cf040a0d3202/Screenshot_2023-12-13_at_09.48.00.png)
Newsflash
Paul is understood to have passed away on 28 November, according to reports, just months after his beloved wife who passed away earlier this year at the age of 62.
A Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service spokesperson said to The Daily Record: “The Procurator Fiscal received a report in connection with the death of a 73-year-old man in Perth on 28 November 2023.
“Following investigation the Procurator Fiscal concluded that no further action was required.
“The family have been informed.”
Both of Maddison and Gardiner took very different approaches to their newfound lotto earnings.
After move to Perth and separating from his wife Ruth, Maddison hired Evelyn McGillivary to clean his new sprawling property – and, adding another movie-like twist to his colourful life, he ended up falling in love with her.
The couple got hitched in a beach ceremony in Mauritius on Valentine’s Day back in 1997.

Paul later sold their huge home to a member of the Stagecoach family for £450,000 after he had totted up a £10,000 bill by renovating the mansion.
Former florist Evelyn previously told the Record: “It has been a fabulous and very happy house but it has become too big for us.
“Sometimes we moved bedrooms just for a change, but really it’s time for the next part of the dream.
“We have done the big house thing. Now we want something more manageable. This house is a lottery fantasy now.
“Maybe another winner will buy it.”

The pair then upgraded to the 16th-century Robgill Tower, situated near Dumfries, which they snapped up for £650,000 – but they reportedly lived like recluses in the B-listed building.
According to the Daily Express, neighbours in the nearby village of Kirtlebridge said they rarely saw the lottery winner or Evelyn leave their 40-acre estate.
The Brit then decided to sell the sprawling tower in 2008 for a nice £2.8million, before moving back towards Perth.
Meanwhile, his former business partner Gardiner revealed that he blew his £11million and is now back working regular job after a series of bad investments and buying a football club.
