Martin Lewis’ MSE issues 21 day warning to anyone with a Tesco Clubcard

A 21-day warning has been sent out to Tesco shoppers across the nation, as it may be time to check your Clubcards.

The supermarket chain has sounded out the urgent message as there are millions of points that are yet to be used, over £18 million worth apparently, which will expire come the end of November.

Tesco Clubcard users have until 11.59pm on 30 November to make use of their points – or so you may think.

Trust Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert (MSE) to have a trick to extend the lifespan of your precious Clubcard vouchers.

How does a Tesco Clubcard actually work?

For Brits who may not know exactly how the concept works, you can earn points as you shop, which can be accumulated and turned into vouchers for food or with Tesco’s partners.

Every £1 spent is equal to one Clubcard point, and a point is then worth one penny.

Essentially, 150 points will give you £1.50 to spend, but to get to 150 points, you’ll need to have spent £150 at Tesco.

That is also the minimum number of points that will qualify you for a voucher.

Though they are worth face value at Tesco, they can be worth double if spent at one of the supermarket’s partners, such as Disney+, Pizza Express and the Hotels.com, to name a few.

If you do choose to transfer points into reward partner codes, they expire after just six months.

How do you make Clubcard points last?

So, what trick has Martin Lewis got up his sleeve this time?

The team at MSE have highlighted the three ways you can extend your points beyond the end of November.

Buy something small on the Rewards page

Heading to the Tesco Clubcard Rewards page or donating to one of the store-partnered charities could help you extend the validity of your points.

This is because the remaining balance will be credited back to your account as points.

Basically, if you spend 50p on an item with a £5 Clubcard voucher, the remaining 450 points will be put back in your account, worth £4.50.

Get vouchers

Manually swapping points for vouchers or waiting for them to be converted with your next statement is an option.

Remember the expiry date for these vouchers too, as they will last two years.

Spend as little as you can

Getting something like a 50p restaurant voucher, which is worth double, is a good alternative.

You can do this for each individual voucher, and you can decide if it’s worth it for small amounts.

Doing this for a £10 voucher may be worth it, though you might not deem anything less as worth all the hassle.

How do I find out what Clubcard vouchers I can use?

All you have to do is log into your Clubcard account on the official Tesco website or on the app – log in with your email or Clubcard number and head to ‘My Clubcard Account’.

Here, you can click on ‘vouchers’ to see all of the vouchers you might have available to spend.

You can use the code in any vouchers here to spend online too, but if you want to use them in-store, you’ll need to print it out and physically bring that with you.

Martin Lewis’ MSE issues two-week warning to anyone with a Tesco Clubcard

Man of the people Martin Lewis has spoken once more and this time it’s Tesco Clubcard holders who need to listen up

Emily Puckering

Martin Lewis’ MSE team is back once more to issue Brits a warning and this time, it’s all about the Tesco Clubcard.

Ah Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, a man for the people… whatever you want to call him, there’s no denying that he and his team are responsible for a lot of us saving those pennies every month.

Whether he’s making us realise we’re actually owed hundreds of pounds, or issuing a £520 compensation warning to those who’ve flown in the last six years, Lewis is always about to assist with our financial woes.

Even if it means saving a couple of quid on the weekly shop, he’s always on hand.

And now, Lewis’ Money Saving Expert team has a warning for those who rely on Tesco’s infamous Clubcard.

A two-week warning

On Lewis’ MSE website, a two-week warning has been given to Clubcard holders over vouchers that may soon expire.

“If you’ve got a Tesco Clubcard, check when your vouchers are due to expire as there are two weeks left to spend or extend nearly £17 million-worth before they run out on Friday 31 May,” the warning reads.

“In addition, more than £27 million in ‘Reward Partner’ codes – vouchers that have been exchanged to spend at various third party retailers – are set to expire over the next four weeks.”

How to check if you have vouchers that will soon expire

As per the MSE website, Clubcard vouchers are valid for two years from the date they were issued. If you’re unsure when yours expire and you’ve still got them in paper format, check the date on the voucher itself.

If you’ve lost your paper vouchers, or are unsure if you had any in the first place, you can check on the Tesco Clubcard site or app.

Double the value of your vouchers

By spending the vouchers at Tescos ‘Reward Partners’, such as Bella Italia, Chessington World of Adventures, and Disney+, the value can be doubled.

For example, 500 points are usually worth £5 to spend at Tesco, but if you exchange your vouchers for codes to spend with a Reward Partner, 500 points become £10.

Try to extend them

While vouchers are valid for two years, if you don’t want to spend them just yet, you could try and extend them which has to be done by 11.59pm on Friday 31 May.

MSE states you can either:

  • Make a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard Rewards page (not in store or on other Tesco pages), or donate to one of its partnered charities.
  • Swap points for vouchers manually, or wait for them to be converted with your next statement.
  • There’s no minimum spend, but the aim is to fork out as little as possible. A good option might be a 50p restaurant voucher (worth £1 at your chosen restaurant).

As Tesco says, every little helps!

Ah yes, the ultimate pair of money savers

Jess Battison

Martin Lewis’ MSE has shared a three-day warning to Tesco Clubcard holders.

Ah yes, two heroes of our nation; the Money Saving Expert (MSE) and our trusty Clubcards.

Because let’s be honest, if you’re shopping without one in Tesco, what’s actually the point in shopping there? Even for the cheaper meal deals alone it’s a no-brainer to have one.

But it turns out not everyone is making quite as much money-saving use out of their Clubcard as they could. Not only do the magical things often get you a discount on your shopping but they also rack up points which can be turned into vouchers.

You can then use these all sorts of places, from Thorpe Park and Cineworld to Hungry Horse pubs and Pizza Express.

However, Lewis’ MSE has warned shoppers that £14 million-worth of Tesco Clubcard vouchers are set to expire this Saturday (31 August).

The vouchers are only valid for two years from the date they were issued which you’ll have converted your points into yourself.

On the app or on the ‘My Clubcard account’ tab on the site, once you’ve hit a minimum of 150 points, you can claim a voucher.

You can then spend them in a Tesco to knock some more money of your shopping, with 150 points totalling to £1.50.

Or, you can be a little thriftier and double the value by spending them at a ‘Reward Partner’. As well as the locations mentioned earlier, you could use them towards watching films with a Disney+ membership, grabbing some scran at Prezzo or even to go towards the likes of RAC Breakdown Cover.

But if you’ve checked your expiry date and it’s approaching, Lewis’ team has suggested a possibility to extend the vouchers by another two years.

The MSE lot do warn that technically ‘Tesco can refuse a Reward Partner order if it decides you’re trying to game the system by redeeming vouchers just to extend their validity’. However, when they tested the trick out ‘it worked just fine’.

So, make sure you do it before 11:59pm on Saturday and then make a small purchase on Tesco Clubcard Rewards or donate to one of its partner charities. They recommend doing something like grabbing a 50p restaurant voucher.

Then, the remaining balance is credited back to your account as point – e.g., if you spend 50p using a £5 voucher, you’ll be given 450 points back.

You’ve then got the choice to swap them back into vouchers yourself or wait for them to be converted with your Clubcard statement. Either way, the new vouchers won’t expire for another two years.

Well, get on it lads, you don’t want to lose out on spending those points.

According to Martin Lewis’ MSE, £14 million are due to run out by the end of today (31 August)

Financial expert Martin Lewis is back again to make sure Brits get full value for money – and this time, he’s issued a fresh warning to Tesco Clubcard owners who must act today (31 August).

The founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, 52, is best known for offering advice on how to save a few quid, as well as managing your money, and getting the best bang for your buck.

This time, his MoneySavingExpert (MSE) website had provided an important reminder for Tesco Clubcard owners.

How does the Tesco Clubcard work?

Clubcard is basically a loyalty program that rewards customers for shopping at Tesco in-store and online.

By signing up for the Clubcard, customers earn points for every pound spent; one point for every £1 in-store and online or one point for every £2 on fuel, according to Tesco’s website.

These points add up and are converted into Clubcard vouchers, which are sent out every three months, and can be used to save money on future purchases.

Clubcard owners also get a special discount on selected items online and in-store.

Points then get boosted up to three times their value when exchanged for rewards from Tesco’s partners – which is great news for discounts on restaurants, travel, and entertainment services.

Once you’ve signed up through the Tesco app or website, you can choose a physical card, a key fob, or the digital version through the app, which is the most practical if you know how to use a phone.

MSE has warned that Tesco Clubcard vouchers issued in August 2022 are set to expire at 11.59pm this evening.

These vouchers are only valid for two years and you’ll need to use them up quick before you lose them.

However, there is an unknown hack that allows you to get an extension on the vouchers.

MSE explains that if you make a small purchase on the Clubcard Rewards page, the remaining balance is then credited back on the Clubcard.

“So if you spend 50p using a £5 Clubcard voucher, you’ll get 450 points back (worth £4.50),” MSE said.

“You’ll need to do this for each individual voucher, so it’s worth weighing up if it’s actually worth it for smaller denominations.

You might want to check to see if you've got some Clubcard vouchers lying around (Tesco)

“For example, if you’ve a £10 voucher it could be worth it. If you’ve got a handful of £1 vouchers, maybe less so.”

The website suggests that ‘you should also check if you have any codes to use at Tesco’s Reward Partners’

“When you exchange Clubcard vouchers to use at one of Tesco’s Reward Partners, you’re sent a new voucher with a code to redeem,” they added.

“These codes are usually valid for six months, and there’s no way of extending them (that we’re aware of).”

Martin Lewis issues warning to any household earning under £35,000

Martin Lewis issues warning to any household earning under £35,000

It concerns big money and importantly, it’s money that you could be missing out on

Tom Earnshaw

Martin Lewis and his Money Saving Expert (MSE) team have issued an alert to more than one million Brits who live in a household that earns less than £35,000.

And if you follow the advice of the finance experts, you could find yourself up to £5,800 better off after having missed out on what you can legally claim.

It is the latest guidance from Lewis’ lot at MSE headquarters and follows on from critical advice that the big man himself issued out earlier this week concerning everyone who bought a car before 2021, with millions lodging claims for compensation.

He’s also taken the time in recent weeks to alert people to the reality of using ‘buy now, pay later’ apps, such as Klarna, ahead of major rule changes coming to them.

Warning to any household earning under £35,000

Through his MSE team, which Lewis still oversees despite selling the company for £87 million in 2012, there is a warning to a total of 1.4 million Brits who are missing out on thousands of pounds.

In particular, it applies to those who live in a house that earns less than £35,000.

The money comes from Universal Credit, a means-tested social security payment given to millions of people in the United Kingdom to help them afford to live.

Money is given out to people in need to help them afford basic living and housing costs; but Lewis’ team warns that middle income earns could be missing out without realising.

Put a claim in, you've nothing to lose (ITV)

Put a claim in, you’ve nothing to lose (ITV)

As well as this, people earning up to £60,000 may also not be claiming what they are legally entitled to – probably due to the assumption that benefits don’t apply to higher earners.

But it doesn’t matter in this case, given that the situation we’re on about is children and the potential of increased childcare costs.

What has Martin Lewis said about Universal Credit?

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on ITV, Lewis previously stated: “Let’s start with Universal Credit; 1.25 million people missing out on an average of around £9,600 a year. Who should be checking if they’re entitled to these benefits?

“OK, so Universal Credit is the catch-all benefit for people of working age to help with living and housing. Now, the crucial thing to understand here is this is not just for people out of work. 41 percent of Universal Credit applicants are people who get Universal Credit and are in work.”

Lewis added: “But you could be income stretching up to £40,000 a year of family income. If you’ve got children and you’re paying for childcare and you’re paying for rent, you could still be entitled to Universal Credit. So that’s my rule of thumb family income, below 40 grand.

“Get yourself on an online benefits calculator. It will take about 10 minutes. Put your details in and see if you’re entitled to this. And even if you checked a year ago because the thresholds went up in April. There are a few people not too many, but a few people who are now eligible who weren’t eligible before.”

Over on the Universal Credit website, run by the government, it says that people ‘may be able to get Universal Credit if you’re on a low income or need help with your living costs’.

It adds: “You could be: out of work, working (including self-employed or part time) or unable to work, for example because of a health condition.”

One rule that all Universal Credit applicants have to abide by to get the benefit is to have less than £16,000 in your bank account. That includes savings and investments.

It’s definitely worth checking it out, especially if you earn below then £35,000 mark.
