Reason why women are banned from waterslide that world champion diver ignored

This is the reason why a water slide banned women from riding, and it may not be what you think.

Yep, it’s 2024 and here we are, discussing something that women aren’t allowed to do while their male counterparts are free to go ahead and enjoy.

But before we jump to conclusions, it’s important to note that there’s actually a rather specific reasoning behind why women aren’t allowed to ride this particular water slide.

The ‘men’s only’ water slide

Located in Austria’s Area 47 water park, the vertical drop slide is dubbed as ‘Europe’s fastest water slide’, and it certainly looks like it lives up to its name as it can reach speeds of up to 50mph.

But something riders will be unlikely to miss is the big sign that’s placed right next to the entrance of the slide, that reads: “Due to high risk of injury, women are not allowed to use this slide!”

Though this has been enough to put many women off from going on the slide, it didn’t stop seven-time world champion cliff diver Rhiannan Iffland, who ignored the warning and took the plunge anyway.

The Australian decided to film it too, and post it on social media.

Take a look:

So, why exactly are women banned from the high-speed slide?

Area 47 previously clarified to LADbible that women aren’t banned from the attraction due to ‘sexist’ reasons, but due to the chance of them getting some pretty nasty injuries from it.

In recent years, there have been some shocking reports of women getting their insides ‘ripped apart’ by high-speed water slides such as Area 47’s.

According to the National Library of Medicine in the US, females can sustain terrible injuries if high pressured water goes into their body. There’s also the risk of infections due to foreign bodies found in the water.

Area 47 said that when the water park was built back in 2009, it ‘did not intend to create a men-only attraction’.

“Initially, this particular slide was open to both women and men,” a spokesperson explained. “However, in the second year, we noticed a significant increase in accidents on this slide, which required us to take action.”

Ensuring the safety of guests, ‘regardless of gender’

The water park then consulted with doctors and the authorities, as well as the manufacturer of the slide, which ‘led to a difficult decision’: “Either disassemble the water slide or restrict its use to men only, as it stands now.”

“Our highest priority is ensuring the safety and happiness of all our guests, regardless of gender,” they went on.

“The risks for women using this slide were tragically highlighted a few years ago when a woman was severely injured on a similar slide in the Canary Islands.”

After Iffland’s clip of the slide went viral online, she told news.com.au: “It was never my intent to mock the safety regulations of this water slide.

“A person’s safety is paramount and I am constantly weighing up any danger with my job. To suggest otherwise, is wrong.”

Rhiannan Iffland had the ultimate f**k around and find out moment

You know the age-old phenomena where someone tells you not to do something and it makes you want to do it more?

This is exactly what happened to Australian professional diver Rhiannan Iffland when she visited a water park in Austria and saw there was a slide which was prohibited to women.

A high-diver, Rhiannan was no stranger to extreme water sports, having successfully dived from heights as high as 20 metres (66 feet).

However this adventure would be completely different to any of her previous accomplishments.

During a visit to the Area 47 adventure park in Austria, the 33-year-old discovered one of the park’s most daunting slides had a stern ‘no women’ warning.

Ever the rebel, Rhiannan decided to see what she and others were missing out on and jumped on the slide.

Check out the clip below:

In the clip, Rhiannan can be heard saying ‘women are not supposed to do this slide’ before ignoring the advice in favour of ‘YOLO’.

The diver’s friend counts her in and then Rhiannan can be seen flying down the slide – which boasts speeds of up to 50 mph – while screaming from either adrenaline or terror.

Sharing the footage on Instagram, she captioned the video: “Here for a good time not a long time! Another YOLO moment.”

Why are women advised against using the slide at Austria’s Area 47 adventure park?

The video went viral, leaving many people to question why a slide which excluded around half of the adult population existed.

Was it sexism? An elaborate prank?

No, turns out the reason is due to health and safety.

In recent years, there have been reports of women having their insides ‘ripped apart’ by high-speed water slides.

Which sounds absolutely awful, if I’m being completely honest.

According to the National Library of Medicine in the US, women can sustain horrific injuries if high pressured water enters their body, while there is also a risk of infections due to the foreign bodies found in the water.

When you put it like that, the safety warning sounds completely reasonable.

Rhiannan would later clarify her decision to go on the slide, explaining in an interview with news.com.au that it was ‘never my intent to mock the safety regulations’.

“A person’s safety is paramount and I am constantly weighing up any danger with my job,” she added. “To suggest otherwise, is wrong.”

Area 47 adventure park has since responded to the viral video, telling LADbible Group the slide was originally open to both men and women, but guidelines had since been updated after a ‘a significant increase in accidents on this slide’.

“This led to a difficult decision: either disassemble the water slide or restrict its use to men only, as it stands now,” a spokesperson said.

“Our highest priority is ensuring the safety and happiness of all our guests, regardless of gender.”

People are dying to see what world champion diver Rhiannan Iffland had to endure on the ‘men only’ water slide

If you’ve seen the footage of the world champion diver heading down a water slide which women aren’t allowed to ride, then you’re probably dying to know what all the fuss is about.

Rhiannan Iffland, 32, has really renewed interest in the facilities that Austria’s Area 47 adventure park has to offer after a video of her having a go on ‘Europe’s fastest waterslide’ – even though it’s not female friendly – went viral.

Take a look at it here:

The seven-times world champion cliff diver, from Australia, can be seen laughing off warning signs which state that the water slide is not suitable for women ‘due to a high risk of injury’ and heading down it anyway.

The look of regret on her face was plain to see in the seconds before she let go of the bars and sent herself flying, but viewers were left on quite a cliffhanger when the short clip came to an end.

Unfortunately, Iffland didn’t have a GoPro strapped to her head, so we only got to see her daring stunt from the perspective of her pal who filmed the video.

The last we see of her is the back of her head for a fleeting moment before she hurtles down the water slide and she then lets out a piercing scream – so our imaginations have had to do the rest of the work.

But thankfully, this bloke was kitted out with a load of cameras when he gave the attraction a go back in July 2020, so we can finally get a good idea of what happens next.

Have a look here:

YouTuber TurboSlides, who reviews stomach-churning slides around the world, barely even hesitated before thrusting himself down the slide and right into a barrage of water.

He hurtles down the ‘male-only’ contraption at speeds of up to 50mph, so the experience only lasts for around ten seconds, but this guy didn’t even let out a whimper, let alone a scream.

But then again, the deluge of water that blasts at him might have just drowned out his cries of terror.

I doubt TurboSlides paid much attention at the time due to all the water flooding into his face, but you can also get a cracking view of the Area 47 adventure park on your way down too.

But with the speeds you fly down at paired with the high-pressure water which helps propel you down the vertical drop, it’s no wonder that women are not allowed to ride it for safety reasons.

Social media users initially presumed the rule might have been introduced due to sexism, but it’s actually because Area 47 are seemingly concerned about female visitors doing some serious damage to themselves.

According to the National Library of Medicine in the US, women can sustain horrific injuries if high pressured water enters their body, while there is also a risk of infections due to the foreign bodies found in the water.

And in recent years, there have been reports of women having their insides ‘ripped apart’ by high-speed water slides.

So it might be best just to head home and watch someone else do it on YouTube next time you’re not allowed to go on a water slide instead of breaking the rules.

Iffland insisted she did not intend to undermine Area 47’s regulations with her antics after her video went viral.

She told news.com.au: “It was never my intent to mock the safety regulations of this water slide. A person’s safety is paramount and I am constantly weighing up any danger with my job.

Millions of women across UK are bizarrely waking up at 3.29am for the very same reason

Millions of women across UK are bizarrely waking up at 3.29am for the very same reason

According to research, 3:29am is the most common time for women to suddenly wake up

Joe Harker

According to new research loads of women are waking up unexpectedly in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.

This is according to Dunelm, who make their living selling all sorts of things you can sleep on so you’d hope they know what they’re talking about.

Their research says that one of the most common things keeping women up at night is insomnia brought on by the menopause, and that there are about 13 million people in the UK who are menopausal or perimenopausal.

The average age of the menopause is 51, but it typically arrives between the ages of 45 and 55 and comes in three stages, perimenopause, menopause and post menopause.

Around five percent of women go through ‘early menopause’ where it occurs between the ages of 40 and 45, while one percent go through ‘premature ovarian insufficiency’ where the menopause arrives before the big four zero.

Of the millions of women who are menopausal or perimenopausal a big chunk will have suffered from some kind of insomnia.

As for what this all has to do with 3:29am, according to Dunelm’s research that’s the most common time to be kept awake by insomnia.

Dr Clare Spencer said that a woman going through the menopause would experience all sorts of symptoms, including lack of sleep which then has an impact on so many things including mood and physical health.

Whether suffering from insomnia or not, many of us will have had those nights where we wake up for reasons we can’t explain and just end up not being able to get back to sleep.

For the women in the study who were kept awake in the middle of the night the attempts to tackle the lack of sleep were varied, with 53 percent preferring to just toss and turn until they eventually went back to sleep.

Other popular responses included reading a book for it bit or picking up the phone for an early-morning scroll on social media, with around 30 percent of women trying these options, while 20 percent would go and watch TV for a bit and 17 percent would stare at the unforgiving clock.

The doctor warned that a lack of sleep could bring about a ‘vicious cycle’ where your brain is sapped of energy, focuses on the negative and that tanks your mood.

She recommended avoiding stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine or nicotine before bed, and to avoid heavy meals right before going to bed.

Also part of the study was two-time Olympic gold medal winning athlete Dame Kelly Homes, who said that waking up at three in the morning ‘became a regular occurrence for me’.

She said she’d suffered from perimenopausal insomnia and it made her ‘so exhausted every day’.

As for her solution, Dame Kelly admitted she still only got about five to six hours of sleep a night but went to bed later to avoid waking up in the middle of her sleeping time.

She added that she used scented sleep sprays and described getting blackout curtains for the bedroom as ‘a must’.

Reason why 'suicide pod' could be banned before it's even used

Reason why ‘suicide pod’ could be banned before it’s even used

The pod was expected to be used for the first time by a patient next week

Brenna Cooper

Warning: This article contains discussion around suicide, which some readers may find distressing.

Here is the reason why the futuristic ‘suicide pod’ is likely to be banned in Switzerland.

Designed by Dr. Philip Nitschke’s company, Exit International, the pod – also known as the Sarco pod – was created with the idea of allowing euthanasia patients to end their lives painlessly and without the aid of a doctor.

The controversial invention was unveiled back in 2019 and was set to be used for the first time ever by a patient next week, according to Nitschke.

However, this plan could be stopped short by Swiss prosecutors, who are looking to ban the pod.

What is the Sarco pod?

A 3D-printed chamber, the Sarco pod is often referred to as the ‘Telsa of euthanasia’ due to its futuristic look and works by filling the chamber with nitrogen.

As the gas fills the chamber, levels of oxygen will rapidly decrease – meaning that the patient will fall unconscious after one minute. It is reported that it will take around 10 minutes to kill someone, with an emergency stop button should someone change their mind.

The company argues that the pod will allow ‘a peaceful, even euphoric death’ for the patient.

However, Swiss authorities argue that this is not the case, adding that there is ‘no reliable’ information to prove the device will work as intended.

The arguments are also backed up by a review from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which outlined that a patient could face a painful death should the pod malfunction.

Swiss prosecutor Peter Sticher has since revealed that Nitschke would face legal repercussions should the device be used, which could see him face up to five years in prison.

“There is no reliable information about the method of killing,” he wrote.

“[It is] completely unclear who has control over which mechanical process during the dying process.”

Newspaper Blick has also added that operators of the pod could also face criminal consequences.

Euthanasia is currently legal in Switzerland, with Article 115 of the Swiss penal code stating that individuals can assist in another person’s suicide as long as the motive for doing so is not ‘selfish’.

Companies offering euthanasia are also required to be non-profit organisations and are not allowed to profit off of other people ending their own lives.

The law adds that people seeking to end their own life must also be ‘of sound mind’. The country also sees numerous visitors from countries where assisted suicide is illegal seeking to end their own lives.

If you’ve been affected by any of these issues and want to speak to someone in confidence, please don’t suffer alone. Call Samaritans for free on their anonymous 24-hour phone line on 116 123.
