Man who bet entire life savings on single roulette spin reveals what he was thinking as the ball was thrown in

The man who bet his entire life savings on a single roulette spin has revealed what he was thinking as the ball was thrown in.

When he was 32-years-old, Ashley Revell decided to make an absolute gamble (by every means of the world) and sold all of his possessions – from his home to his clothes – to take a load of cash to the Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, USA.

Back in 2004, the bloke had Sky One reality TV show, Double or Nothing, following him as he took his case of £76,840 to the casino cage and withdrew the money in chips.

And then he only had one decision left to make: red or black?

The Londoner decided to leave this until he actually got to the table, talk about the eleventh hour.

Looking back on the moment for Discovery UK, Revell said he was walking along, hoping for some ‘divine inspiration’ but he simply ‘wasn’t getting that’.

His friends and family were all stood watching on, with a decent crowd gathered to witness what could be a life-changing choice.

“It was a huge, huge decision,” he pointed out. “I looked round and was like, well, ‘red or black, what am I going to do?’

“I didn’t know. One would be the right answer – I just had to pick that.”

Well, yes, that tends to be how these things work.

“I had nothing else to think about, it was the biggest decision of my life,” he continued.

In the end, he decided to go with red, having to make his decision within the ball doing two circuits of the wheel.

“For some reason, I asked to kiss the ball,” Revell explained. “He span the ball and I immediately just said red and pushed all my chips on red.”

Then, everything went silent with him feeling like he was ‘in a vacuum of silence’.

It was at this moment the man realised he ‘had nothing’ as the reality was if it went on black he ‘would be without anything, in Las Vegas, pretty much destitute’.

“I could lose everything,” Revell recalled thinking.

But luckily for him, the ball landed on red and he returned from his daze into a ‘euphoric moment’.

“It was just crazy,” he said. “In that moment I had doubled my money.”

And of course, he was simply thinking ‘thank god’ with the understandable: “Don’t do that again, that was a silly thing to do.”

With many questioning why he didn’t go for a second try, he added: “I shouldn’t have done it again, I shouldn’t have done it in the first place.”

Plus, looking back at the show, Revell just sees an ‘arrogant twit’ who he kind of ‘hope loses’.

A former winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has made a huge admission 25 years later.

Fans will remember John Carpenter delivering the ‘coldest sentence ever spoken’ when he appeared on the show back in 1999.

The tax agent took part in the first ever season of the American version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, hosted by the late Regis Philbin.

Not only did Carpenter make it all the way to the last, million dollar question, he did it without using a single lifeline.

Watch the incredible scenes below:

For the final question, he was asked to provide the correct name of the US President who had appeared on the TV series Laugh-In.

The four options provided were Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.

That’s when Carpenter decided to use his lifeline, but not for the reason you think.

Logically, you’d presume it being be a smart move to use a lifeline for the most important question, but instead, the American opted to deliver a moment of pure confidence.

After calling up his dad, a very smiley Carpenter said: “I don’t really need your help. I just wanted to let you know that I’m gonna win the million dollars.”

Without much hesitation, he delivered the right answer, which was President Nixon.

Now, in an update 25 years on, Carpenter has spoke about the relief he had after answering the final question correctly.

“I would say the thing that I remember the most about the moment when I won was just, you know, ‘Thank goodness I was right,’ because if I had been wrong after doing that, just I don’t know what would have happened in my life,” he said.

“It was a, you know, a cultural touchstone, you know, back then and it kept going for many, many years.

“I like to think that I had a little bit to do with that.

“I mean, I did buy a car, but I needed one anyway. I was just driving around in an old Honda Del Sol with some body damage at the time. You know, things are, you know, more comfortable.

“I mean, it’s not like I could live on it forever. Still kept my job, but it was just good to have.”

To this day, viewers are still amazed, as one TikTok user commented: “Coldest sentence ever spoken.”

While another replied: “What a flex.”

A third also added: “Bro just smiled,” as a fourth wrote: “You can tell exactly when he realised he was going to win.”

Gambled it all once? Let’s do it again

Putting everything you have on one hand of roulette is a pretty brave move.

But the man who did just that is taking the plunge again 20 years down the line.

Back in 2004, Ashley Revell sold everything he had – his home, clothes, and personal belongings – to fund an all or nothing bet.

It saw him place more than £75,000 on a single hand of roulette at the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

Backing red, the bet thankfully came in leaving Ashley walking around Sin City with more than £150,000 in his back pocket.

This week, two decades on, LADbible tracked Ashley down after the clip went viral once again.

And the entrepreneur revealed he’s once again risking it all.

Ashley, 52, said he’s taking part in yet another ‘all or nothing’ bet – this time in the world of business.

He’s the man behind new tech start up company Four.me.

The business is a brand new way of approaching URLs. Speaking to Ashley, he said it’s ‘like a memorable QR code but with words and colours instead’.

He said: “The business is only really just starting up but it’s good to get going and it’s exciting to come up with something that’s brand new.

“It’s another all or nothing move for me, I’m truly invested.

“I’ve always been lucky so far in life and I’ve always been positive, so I’m hoping this will be another win for me.”

Ashley has put everything he has into the firm. So far the business has more than 1,000 users with clients already in the pipeline once, with its patent pending.

Ashley made his huge Vegas bet while appearing on Sky One reality show called Double or Nothing.

Ashley Revell hit headlines back in 2004.

It saw him appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! over in the United States and This Morning back home in the UK.

After the win, he admitted it was ‘very dangerous’ to be walking around Vegas with £150,000 in his hands.

A lover of poker, one of his first acts after the win was to spend £10,000 taking part in the World Series of Poker; a move that he says he’ll never regret.

He also had conversations with the production team behind ITV gameshow Red or Black?, with its creator Simon Cowell taking inspiration from Ashley’s reality show appearance.

Outside of gambling, 2018 saw Ashley uncover a Bronze Age hoard while he was out with his metal detector near his home in Elham, Kent, with members of the Medway History Finders metal detecting group.

Speaking to Kent Online at the time, he said: “I hadn’t found much all day, just the usual shotgun cartridges and bits of foil, then I had an interesting signal and dug up a piece of green metal.

“I got fed-up with digging up this ‘scrap’ and started to walk back to a tent that had been set up where members were sitting around the table taking a break.

“I got back to the tent and emptied my pockets into the ‘scrap’ bin, sat down and had a cup of tea.

“Then the club chairman went to empty his pockets into the bin and suddenly reached in and held up a piece of the ‘scrap’ I had put in there and said ‘who put this in here?'”

Revell led the group back to where he found the ‘scrap’ only for them to discover rare items dating back to 900 and 800 BC. In total, they found 23 ingot fragments, two kilo complete ‘bun’ ingot and a selection of axes.

He doubled his money after gambling his life savings

A bloke who won big after he bet his life savings on a single spin of the roulette wheel had another incredible stroke of luck a few years later.

Londoner Ashley Revell hit headlines back in 2004 after the then-32-year-old decided to sell everything he had – including his home and his clothes – to gamble £76,840 ($135,300) all on red at the Plaza Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.

The whole thing played on a Sky One reality show called Double or Nothing, where viewers could help Revell decide whether he was going to put it all or red or black.

Sky One

Speaking to CNN about what was going through his head when it happened, he said: “It was just… pleading that I’d pick[ed] it and that it would come in red.

“Before I actually walked up to the wheel, I was thinking about putting it on black, and then suddenly the guy was spinning the ball around and all the Sky viewers said… they [had] voted that I should put it on red.

“So suddenly I just put it all on red.”

And the gamble paid off for Revell who ended up doubling his money and winning £153,680 ($270,600).

In a sweet twist of fate, Revell used some of his winnings to go on the ‘trip of a lifetime’ travelling across Europe on a motorbike, while there he ended up meeting the woman he would later marry.

And, somewhat incredibly, Revell’s good luck didn’t end there, in 2018 he managed to uncover a Bronze Age hoard while he was out with his metal detector near his home in Elham, Kent, with members of the Medway History Finders metal detecting group.

Gambler Ashley Revell put all of his life savings on red

One man decided to risk quite literally everything he owned by heading to Sin City for a life-changing roulette-spin.

Londoner Ashley Revell was 32 years old when he sold all of his possessions – including his home and his clothes – to gamble £76,840 ($135,300) at the Plaza Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.

Back in 2004, he put his life-savings on red, showcased in Sky One reality show Double or Nothing.

Viewers of the programme would help Ashley make his decision over whether to go with red or black.

“It was just… pleading that I’d pick[ed] it and that it would come in red,” he told CNN at the time.

“Before I actually walked up to the wheel, I was thinking about putting it on black, and then suddenly the guy was spinning the ball around and all the Sky viewers said … they [had] voted that I should put it on red.

“So suddenly I just put it all on red.

“But … I was just pleading that it would come in and I’d get lucky this time. What I was really worried about was that I’d lose and my parents would be upset and my family would, you know, all my friends would be upset.”

Ashley revealed that his father was totally against the idea, as any caring parent would.

The dad was quoted in an interview, saying: “I told him he was a naughty boy, he was a bad boy, he shouldn’t do it. He should work like all other kids do.”

“I mean, I obviously went and shook his hand before I did it, and after he was just hugging me and jumping up and down,” Ashley explained.

“So, you know, I think most all dads are just concerned, and he’s seeing all my friends being married off and having kids and stuff, and he’s like any father, he just wants me to settle down and make sure I’m secure.”

It was indeed a daring move, and one that massive paid off because Revell doubled his money to a whopping £153,680 ($270,600).

The incredible feat was viewed around the world and was even the inspiration to another reality show – Red or Black.

At the time, Revell wisely walked away with the prize money and used it on an online poker company called Poker UTD.

Although this didn’t work out, he also spent some of the cash on a cross-Europe motorbike road-trip where he ended up meeting his future wife.

Safe to say that his tiny decision had a huge impact on his life.

So much so that 15 years after his big win, Revell returned to Las Vegas where the Plaza commemorated the win and its new single zero roulette table with a promotional free chip to players.

Revell even placed a ceremonial bet, although the stakes weren’t quite as high this time round.

He told KSNV: “I have said that the roulette spin at the Plaza was the most amazing moment of my life.

“Single 0 roulette wasn’t around back then. Clearly a lot has changed in gaming and at the Plaza. So, I am excited to return, and hopefully, we can all celebrate another successful roulette spin.”
