Plans are afoot to build the longest skyscraper in the world in New York – and it certainly has a unique design.
One architectural company in NYC is thinking bigger than anything you’ve seen before.
Oiio is proposing to build a 4,000ft structure, dubbed ‘The Big Bend’.

It certainly looks impressive (Oiio)
They hope that this will push the boundaries of what we can create by sneakily using a loophole in New York’s planning laws.
Usually, when you think of a skyscraper, you’re thinking of a tall building that goes straight up to the sky.
But this upside-down U will break the mould.
The designers think this will help them to ‘overcome the limit of the skies’.
Why is The Big Bend u-shaped?

The New York structure would be 4000ft (Oiio)
The Big Bend definitely has a unique design, but there’s actually an important reason why it’s designed to be the shape it is.
Planning laws are crazy strict in NYC – especially for skyscrapers, with developers required to purchase ‘air rights’ so that they can create massive structures.
If The Big Bend was 4,000 feet straight up, it would be considerably more expensive.
But because this design folds back to the ground, they’ll be able to create something massive without having to purchase more space upwards.
It’s sneaky, but it’s also smart.
One pretty cool part of the design – the elevator goes all the way round the u-shaped bend.
Oiio writes on its website: “The elevator can travel in curves, horizontally and in continuous loops.
“The innovative track changing system allows for the horizontal connection of two shafts on the top and bottom to create a continuous loop.”
How does The Big Bend measure up to other skyscrapers?

The elevators go all the way round (Oiio)
The Big Bend would be bigger than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (by more than 1,000 feet) if you measure the whole length of the bend.
In terms of height, it would be 200 feet taller than the One World Trade Center.
Designer Ioannis Oikonomou writes on Oiio’s website: “We have become familiar with building height measurements.
“But what if we substituted height with length? What if our buildings were long instead of tall?
“If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world.”
Sounds cool, right? The last we heard was that Oiio is still looking for investors to make their vision a reality, so we’ll have to wait and see if The Big Bend comes to dominate the New York skyline.

New York City could one day have a skyscraper that dangles upside down from an asteroid.
Yeah, you read that correctly.
The Analemma skyscraper was proposed by an architecture firm in New York who wanted to create a totally unique building.
The huge structure would hold apartments (with a gigantic price tag) and would be accessible by drone.

But instead of being fixed to Earth, the block of apartments would be suspended from an asteroid.
Now, it might sound like something completely bonkers and made up – or at the very least, the plot of a movie – but this is an actual real proposal by a company called Clouds Architecture Office.
Obviously it’s nowhere near being built, but they truly believe it’s possible.
“Going back to the earliest known structures, we can see a clear pattern emerging,” said the firm in a statement.
“We are in the process of dislodging ourselves from the planet’s surface.”

So how would it work?
As we know, asteroids orbit the sun, so the skyscraper will always be on the move.
The plan would be to build it in Dubai, but launch it in NYC. The asteroid would then orbit the sun and return to the same spot each day.
Meanwhile, the people residing in the apartments would be able to move between space and Earth using an electromagnetic elevator.
Power would be provided via solar panels and water would come from the surrounding clouds.
“Analemma can be placed in an eccentric geosynchronous orbit which would allow it to travel between the northern and southern hemispheres on a daily loop,” the company explains.
“The ground trace for this pendulum tower would be a figure eight, where the tower would move at its slowest speed at the top and bottom of the figure eight allowing the possibility for the towers occupants to interface with the planet’s surface at these points.
“The proposed orbit is calibrated so the slowest part of the towers trajectory occurs over New York City.”

It would be accessible via drone. (Clouds Architecture Office)
Of course, it’s not all that simple.
One major problem is that it would be absolutely freezing at the top of the tower and as of yet, there simply aren’t cables strong enough to suspend the building.
However, the company believes that one day it could be possible.
We’re not quite sure what the benefits of living in the tower would be, but it’s certainly an interesting concept.

If you take a trip to New York City, you might find yourself passing right by a monstrous monolith of concrete known as 33 Thomas Street.
Besides the ground floor entrance, there are absolutely no windows on this skyscraper, resulting in this brutalist behemoth holding an air of mystery.
If you can’t see inside the windowless skyscraper, then they could be doing anything in there – perhaps this is where the US government has been stashing those aliens all along while we’ve all been thinking about Area 51.
One man who has been in there spoke to the Daily Mail on condition of anonymity about what he saw when he was hired to install something in the building in the early 2000s.
The man and his son said they weren’t allowed into certain parts of the windowless skyscraper, which was built in 1974, and there were bits of the building that were off-limits to any and all visitors.

So far, so reasonable. There are plenty of buildings where you’re not just allowed to wander in and have a poke around at whatever bits you like.
Plus, just because you’ve been hired to do some work on a place doesn’t mean you’ll have the run of the entire building – though feel free to unleash your imagination on the question of what they might have to hide.
Slightly more suspicious is that the man and his son ‘couldn’t ask what’s inside or why we couldn’t go in’ the bits of the building they were forbidden from attempting to access.
It’s not just what he saw, but also what he wasn’t allowed to see.
So obviously it’s aliens, or maybe just stuff they don’t want to talk about and let strangers have a fiddle round with.
Besides, when you have a windowless skyscraper, you might want to cultivate an aura of mystery just for the hell of it.

What they did stumble upon and see were documents detailing what to do with certain machines in the building in the event of nuclear fallout.
When it comes to 33 Thomas Street, however, this baby can apparently be self-sufficient for two weeks in the event of a nuclear catastrophe with enough supplies to keep 1,500 people cared for, which might be important considering what’s officially in there.
The official story is that 33 Thomas Street was built to house phone switching equipment, and it was formerly called the AT&T Long Lines Building.
Basically, it was a place with equipment that connected long distance phone calls – however, it doesn’t mean it hasn’t been safe from a few conspiracy theories.
A few years back, the New York Times reported that this windowless skyscraper could also be a supposed listening post for the National Security Agency (NSA) codenamed ‘Titanpointe’.
They also pointed towards a documentary called Project X and a 2016 report from The Intercept which claimed that the building had some parts of it dedicated to surveillance.

What’s more scary than an ominous skyscraper… an ominous skyscraper without windows.
This terrifying building in New York gives off very eerie vibes as locals still don’t know what goes on inside.
Could it be a secret alien hideout? Or perhaps where the powers that be get up to no good?
Well, Tom Hanks was, in fact, the first to make the observation after sharing a photo of 33 Thomas Street back in 2017.
“This is the scariest building I’ve ever seen! WTF goes on inside?” he tweeted alongside the image.

TikToker Eric Guidry (@e.guidry) has thankfully come to the rescue and explained what the building is actually used for.
“So that building in New York, this windowless building in San Francisco, this one in Chicago, this one in Austin and hundreds more buildings placed conspicuously across the country, in very populous locations,” Guidry says in the clip.
It turns out that the buildings are all part of AT&T’s long lines network.
“Before we had digital telephony, the lines on your phones physically connected to the person on the other end’s phone.
“That meant we need these massive switching hubs. Most of those buildings I showed were built in the ’70s [or earlier].
“That means they didn’t require actual operators.
“And because this machinery didn’t particularly care if there was light or not, they just decided, why add windows?”
Giving more information on the specific AT&T building in New York featured in the original TikTok video, Eric said: “That building is 33 Thomas Street, which is known to be one of the most secure towers in the world.
“It has enough gas, water and electricity to be able to continue running independently for up to two weeks and is supposed to be able to actually withstand a nuclear blast… within reason.
“Although most of the equipment has been digitalised and you don’t need it for phones, it’s still critical for network and internet infrastructure.
“In fact, if you’re watching this in the US, this video probably went through one of those buildings.”
However, several conspiracy theorists believe that the building has been used as a National Security Agency (NAS) surveillance site.
And in 2016, non-profit organisation, The Intercept, claimed that there was ‘compelling evidence’, including leaked documents from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, that pointed towards the building having been used as a surveillance site, code-named TITANPOINTE.
According to their 2016 investigation, a former AT&T engineer said there is ‘a major gateway switch’ that ‘routes all calls between the US and other countries around the world’.
While other theories are a bit more crazy – ranging from vampires to ‘lizard headquarters’.
So who knows?

The portal that connects New York City and Dublin in real-time is going horribly wrong.
You’ll have seen it at least once by now if you’ve spent any time on TikTok over the weekend.
What started off as a sweet idea, connecting the US and Ireland cities, seems to be having some nightmare outcomes. It’s a real, cue your mum’s voice, ‘we just can’t have nice things, can we?’ type of moment.
Like something out of a sci-fi film, ‘The Portal’ offers a real-time, visual live stream to the public in the two iconic locations. Dublin City Council launched the sculpture on 8 May as part of its designation as this year’s European Capital of Smart Tourism.

Probably not what the cities were hoping for. (TikTok/@_aelana)
Founded by a Lithuanian artist, ‘Portals’ are supposed to allow people to ‘meet outside of their social circles and cultures’ and act as a ‘bridge to a united planet’.
Except, what seems to be happening on social media isn’t the most traditional take on friendly and certainly isn’t so ‘united’.
Instead, viral videos show people in Dublin holding up photos of the 9/11 terrorist attacks as people watch on live in New York in absolute horror.
Reacting to that clip on X, users asked: “Who thought a portal would be a good idea?”
As one even said: “One thing for sure is hate always gonna bring people together.”
There was another viral video that showed a reportedly drunk woman, ‘grinding’ her bum on the portal before having to be moved away by police.
Other reports say there was a man totally flashing his bare bum to New Yorkers, people giving the middle finger and a person showing a swastika on their phone – ah, yes, a ‘united planet’.
Although, a woman from Queens told the New York Post she was surprised the behaviour hasn’t been even worse.
“Irish people just want to stir things up. They like to create controversy. It’s not that it’s serious, it’s for fun. Just somebody wanting a reaction,” she said.

At least it’s been a little wholesome too. (TikTok/brownyahare)
Obviously, there have been some more positive moments, with TikTokers capturing the moment they’ve waved at their friend from across the world or performers dancing in time from the different countries.
A Dublin City Council spokesperson told LADbible: “The overwhelming majority of interactions are positive.
“Unfortunately, we have also been witnessing a very small minority of people engaged in inappropriate behaviour, which has been amplified through social media.
“We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days with our partners in New York to ensure that Portals continue to deliver a positive experience for both cities and the world.”
