Recently, on El Hierro, a small island off the coast of Spain, two friends working on a home renovation project found something they never expected. As they went to throw some construction debris away, they noticed a cardboard box by the dumpsters.
The box was taped shut with holes on the sides. The curious men tore off the tape and looked in. There, staring up from their makeshift home, were five abandoned puppies.
The friends couldn’t believe their eyes. They called El Juaclo, an animal rescue, and relayed the news.
“The two men were deeply hurt by such cruelty,” a representative from El Juaclo told The Dodo.
A rescue volunteer named Vanesa headed to the scene and helped the men move the dogs to safety.
The next day, while patrolling the area for anyone left behind, rescuers found a sixth puppy who’d gone unnoticed the day before. They safely contained him and reunited him with his siblings waiting in foster care.
At first, the pups appeared to be in good health. However, after a few days, they began showing signs of severe illness. They suffered from diarrhea and extreme lethargy. But luckily, they weren’t sick for long. After 48 hours of antibiotic treatment, they were back on their paws and feeling much better.
Moved by their rescue experience, each of the friends decided to adopt a puppy. Two other puppy siblings found adoptive homes relatively swiftly. The last two puppies are still looking for their perfect match — ideally with active families who are excited to entertain a playful new friend.
No matter what, these pups don’t have to worry. They can rest easily knowing they won’t be left in the trash ever again.
