Family Goes Camping With One Dog And Wakes Up With Three

Adahn Clarke was on a summer camping trip with her family at Williamson Provincial Campground in Alberta, Canada, when her daughter made a wish on a pink rock she’d found.

It was a simple request: “She told me that she had wished for a new dog,” Clarke told The Dodo.

When Clarke, her partner Chris, her daughter and their dog, Murphy, first arrived at the campgrounds, they were greeted by a friendly dog running around and thought nothing of it.

But as the days passed, the dog, who they dubbed Sunny, hung around their campsite more and more. “She slept under our trailer, under the trailer steps on the mat outside of our trailer, on our picnic table,” Clarke said. “She slept really wherever she wanted to.”

Sunny and Murphy began to play together, sleep together and walk together. And as the family bonded with Sunny, Clarke couldn’t help but worry.

“I started thinking maybe I should be looking for the owners because … she was just so nice that I couldn’t imagine somebody not missing this dog,” Clarke said. “In my mind, she’s the perfect dog. I don’t know why she was just running around.”

But, before Clarke could start her search for the dog’s home, another surprise visitor arrived.

“Chris and I were hanging out by the fire with Sunny, and Sunny had alerted a couple times that night, which she did pretty regularly because there were a lot of coyotes around,” Clarke said. “Then, at midnight, she beelined under our trailer — just ran under a trailer at top speed. And this little puppy popped its head out between the bottom and the second step and just started whining.”

Chris crawled under the trailer and scooped out the fluffy brown and white puppy. It was love at first sight. “I’ve never seen him fall in love with a dog before the way he fell in love with that puppy,” Clarke said. “The puppy was just so cuddly, like cuddled right into our sweaters and didn’t want to leave.”

By then, it was well after midnight, so they brought the puppy inside and went to bed.

“I woke up the next morning and everybody was still there. Sunny was still outside. Everybody was ready to play and start the day,” Clarke said.

With two new dogs in tow and their vacation almost over, Clarke and her family started actively trying to track down Sunny and the puppy’s owners. They asked other campers, posted on social media and in rescue groups, and went knocking on doors.

It took days, but they finally found where the two dogs came from and discussed adopting Sunny and the puppy.

“We came back with the puppy, and my daughter just broke down,” Clarke said. “I’ve never seen her sob like tears of joy before, but that was definitely a tears of joy moment for her.”

Her wish had officially come true two-fold.

Two months later, Sunny and the puppy, now named Suzie, are adjusting to life in a real home. After a whirlwind of vet appointments, training and learning to walk on a leash, they are slowly relaxing and settling into their new life.

“There is so much puppy love to go around now,” Clarke said. “You’ll never sit down without a dog.”
