“Two sweet souls struggled to survive …”
The other day, a Good Samaritan was traveling through Gary, Indiana, when they heard a strange barking sound coming from inside an abandoned laundromat. Concerned, the passerby contacted local authorities for help.
Soon, animal control officer Mari Randolph and Silverstray Social staff members Kelly Carey and Jay Weinberg were on the scene.
Cautiously surveying the dilapidated building, rescuers walked toward the noise, which seemed to be emanating from a pit in the floor. Peeking into the hole, the rescuers found who they’d been looking for — a pair of desperate young pitties trapped beneath their feet.
“Two sweet souls struggled to survive,” Silverstray Social wrote in a video about the rescue.
Using a ladder, a tarp and some rope, rescuers carefully heaved the dogs out of the hole and up into safety.

“It was such a relief that it was finally done,” Carey told The Dodo. “They were up and on their way to starting their next chapter.”
The severely malnourished pups were cautiously kind, seemingly eager for love and affection, but nervous to be around strangers.
Rescuers brought the dogs to a local animal control facility, where they happily snacked on food and water.
These days, the pups are settling into their new foster homes, regaining their strength and preparing to start looking for permanent families. On a recent visit with the dogs, Carey was thrilled to find them with happy attitudes.
“Considering everything, [they’re] really in great spirits,” Carey said. “Super outgoing and bouncy.”
With any luck, these affable pups will be on their way to their new families in no time.
