In 1989, Reba McEntire married Narvel Blackstock — a union that not only marked a new chapter in her life but also made her stepmother to Brandon Blackstock. Though Brandon was already a teenager at the time, Reba had known him since he was just four years old. Even after her divorce from Narvel in 2015, Reba’s bond with the children she helped raise never faded. Sadly, following Brandon’s passing after a long battle with cancer, the country legend continues to hold his memory close to her heart.
Brandon, who grew up under Reba’s care, went on to marry fellow singer Kelly Clarkson, with whom he shared two children. After the heartbreaking news of his death, Clarkson stepped away from the public eye to focus on their kids, while Reba opened up about the profound loss.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Reba reflected, “My relationship with my stepson, Brandon Blackstock, was precious. I absolutely love that child.” She went on to say, “Along with his mom and dad, I helped raise him, Shawna, Chass, and Shelby. They were my kids. I absolutely love all four of them — they’re very close, and Brandon is sorely missed. Truly missed.”
Reba McEntire Finds Strength in Faith
Reba fondly remembered Brandon’s playful spirit and zest for life, sharing, “With his mischievousness and his love of life, he brought joy to everybody that met him, and we’ll never forget him.”
At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards last month, Reba provided an update on how the family has been coping. “We miss him. We miss him every minute,” she said. “The kids are doing well. They’re all bonding together, spending time with one another, and taking it one day at a time.”
Through the grief, Reba has leaned on her faith, finding comfort in knowing that she isn’t alone in her sorrow. “We know God’s got this,” she concluded, her voice steady with conviction.
Brandon’s brother, Shelby, also honored his memory, describing him as “funny, bright, and full of life.” Though his absence leaves a deep void, his warmth and spirit live on through the family he so deeply touched.
