Nicki Minaj Deportation Petitions Explained As More Than 135,000 People Sign Amid Backlash

Several online petitions have appeared calling for Nicki Minaj to be deported from the United States, following an intense backlash from sections of her fanbase. The reaction has grown louder in recent weeks as frustration toward the rapper continues to spread online.

Nicki Minaj has been one of the most successful and recognizable artists in music over the past decade. Despite that long-standing popularity, many former supporters have taken to social media to distance themselves from her and voice disappointment.

The 43-year-old rapper has recently expressed public support for conservative political figures, including Donald Trump. This shift has angered many fans who once viewed her as politically outspoken in a different direction.

Tensions appeared to reach a breaking point when Minaj attended a Turning Point USA event in December as a surprise guest. During the event, she shared the stage with Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Following that appearance, frustration toward the artist seemed to intensify. Minaj is now facing two separate petitions that both call for her removal from the country.

One petition on Change.org has already gathered more than 46,000 signatures. A second petition has surpassed 87,000 signatures, with both calling for Minaj to be deported to Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born.

The renewed attention comes after Minaj previously stated that she entered the United States illegally when she was five years old. That admission has been repeatedly cited by critics supporting the petitions.

In a 2018 Instagram post criticizing Donald Trump’s immigration policies, Minaj wrote: “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant.”

“I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of five.”

Later, during a TikTok live stream in 2024, Minaj said that she never officially became a U.S. citizen.

Minaj addressed the issue directly when she explained: “You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”

This has led many people to ask whether these petitions actually carry any legal weight.

The short answer is no.

Despite Minaj’s statements about entering the country illegally as a child and not holding U.S. citizenship, she does have a green card.

Green cards are issued to non-citizens and allow them to live and work legally in the United States. They also grant permanent resident status.

Because of this legal status, Minaj cannot be deported, regardless of public frustration over her political views or recent appearances.

The American Civil Liberties Union has previously addressed whether someone can be deported for expressing political opinions.

The organization stated: “Criticizing U.S. foreign policy, or voicing any other opinion, is protected by the First Amendment – no matter your immigration status.”

As a result, it is highly unlikely that these petitions will lead to any real legal action.
