Six Types Of Male Orgasms Explained As Expert Shares How Often Ejaculation May Help Reduce Cancer Risk

It is easy to assume that the male orgasm is simple and predictable. Many people grow up believing there is only one clear path to climax for men.

While women are often labeled as more complex when it comes to pleasure, experts say the male orgasm is far more varied than most people realize. The process can involve different sensations, triggers, and physical responses.

According to a sex expert, men can experience as many as six different types of orgasms. Each one plays a role not only in pleasure but may also support prostate health and lower cancer risk.

Speaking to Metro, psychosexual therapist and nurse specialist Lorraine Grover explained that men are capable of experiencing a wide range of orgasmic responses. Each type is triggered in a different way and can feel very distinct.

She also noted that many men do not realize how flexible their bodies can be when it comes to pleasure. Some are surprised to learn that orgasm does not always require an erection.

“Understanding the different types of orgasm can help reduce pressure and improve pleasure,” she said.

Every body responds differently, which means not every man will experience all six types of orgasms. That variation is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about.

“Some men are more physically or emotionally tuned in, while others may need time, support, or better health foundations. The key is curiosity, not comparison,” Grover explained.

Beyond pleasure, experts say orgasm frequency may also impact health. A 2016 study found that ejaculating once a day may reduce a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer. Each year, roughly 1.5 to 1.6 million new cases are diagnosed worldwide.

Researchers at Harvard University also found that having around 21 orgasms per month was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of prostate cancer.

With that in mind, experts broke down the six different types of orgasms men can experience and how each one works.

Ejaculation

This is the orgasm most people think of when discussing male pleasure, and it is the one most often shown in movies and television.

Explaining the process, pharmacist Abbas Kanani said: “It’s the release of semen from the penis during orgasm, which is usually achieved through physical or physiological sexual arousal.”

It involves a two-step process. Sperm moves from the testicles to the urethra and mixes with fluids from the prostate and seminal vesicles. When pelvic muscles contract, semen is pushed out through the urethra.

Grover explained that this orgasm usually feels like a short, rhythmic release paired with pelvic muscle contractions.

Even though it is the most familiar type, it does not always happen. Studies suggest only about 60 percent of men experience ejaculation during every sexual encounter.

“It still depends on healthy erections and arousal. If orgasm feels weak or hard to reach, it’s often a sign to look at the foundations — blood flow, confidence, and timing,” she said.

Pelvic

Pelvic orgasms differ from ejaculation and can occur with very little physical touch. They rely mainly on controlled contractions of the pelvic floor muscles.

“This orgasm feels like internal pulsations radiating through the lower body,” Grover explained, noting that ejaculation may not occur at all.

Kanani added that pelvic floor exercises can help strengthen these muscles and increase the intensity of this type of orgasm.

“By doing this, men can also control ejaculation, maintain an erection, and enhance their orgasm,” he added.

Prostate

Prostate orgasms are described as deeper and more intense than ejaculation, according to experts. They are most commonly achieved through anal stimulation.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. This positioning explains why it can be stimulated during anal sex.

“This orgasm is achieved by the stimulation of the prostate gland through anal, but it can also be achieved by stimulating the perineum – the external area between your genitals and rectum,” Lorraine explained. “This orgasm feels like a slow build to a powerful, full-body release.”

Grover added that prostate orgasms often feel much more intense. Some men avoid exploring them due to stigma or discomfort around anal stimulation.

Dry

Despite common belief, orgasm does not always involve ejaculation. Kanani explained that men can climax without releasing semen.

Grover noted that while the sensation feels similar, it can be more focused and comes with quicker recovery afterward.

Dry orgasms often occur in men who practice edging and control or those who have experienced multiple orgasms before.

Experts caution that men who experience only dry orgasms for a long period should speak with a doctor to rule out underlying health issues.

Blended

Blended orgasms combine more than one type of stimulation, which many men describe as a deeper and more layered experience.

Grover explained that this orgasm blends penile and prostate stimulation, creating surface pleasure alongside a stronger full-body release.

Kanani added that delayed ejaculation and kegel exercises can help build tension without climax, making this type of orgasm easier to achieve.

Multiple

Multiple orgasms are considered one of the most challenging types for men to experience. Kanani explained that this is because men enter a refractory period after climax, which reduces responsiveness to stimulation.

Grover noted that when multiple orgasms do occur, they often begin with a dry orgasm that leads into a more typical ejaculation.

She said: “These aren’t common, but they are real. It takes awareness, confidence, and physical control. Let go of goal-oriented sex — when you focus on sensation over outcome, your body often surprises you.”
