Many people occasionally open Google Maps out of curiosity, scrolling through distant places just to see what the world looks like from above. For some, that casual browsing has now taken an unexpected turn.
Users exploring parts of South America have noticed a formation in the landscape that appears to resemble a giant and unsettling ‘demon face’, complete with what look like eyes and a mouth carved into the terrain.
The Earth X account offered a technical explanation for the eerie image, stating: “That eerie symmetrical ‘face’ (demon/alien/skull vibes) is classic pareidolia + Google satellite stitching artifacts.”
“Cloudy area = spotty imagery, so they mirror/flip sections to fill gaps → creates weird repeating faces.”
Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini is the third-largest national park in Chile and is named after Alberto María De Agostini, the mountaineer and explorer who documented the region through photography.
The park is known for its dramatic landscapes, with rugged mountains, glaciers, and fjords that remain largely untouched due to how remote the area is.
Despite its natural beauty and protected status, the image of the so-called ‘demon face’ quickly grabbed attention online, with many people admitting it looked unsettling at first glance.
“Sure this is someone google having a giggle but just searched for it and it is like this,” one user wrote on X, while another added: “Pretty close to Antarctica and we all know there are no mysteries there! Right?”
This is not the first time Google Maps imagery has unsettled people online. In the past, users have discovered strange markings, symbols, and even a disturbing ‘help’ message visible from above in Los Angeles.
Those markings, which appeared etched into the ground, triggered waves of speculation across social media platforms.
They continued: “I just like to believe this is a prank,” he added, noting that the area is clearly visible from above.
“If you’re writing that, everybody sees you. It seems to me like it’s just a bunch of kids playing a prank.”
