However, if you look a little deeper into Reeves’ seemingly positive demeanor, you’ll find a history filled with struggles that many others never have to face.
Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 2, 1964, to a mother who was an English performer and costume designer and a father who worked as a Hawaiian geologist.
His father abandoned the family when he was only three years old, and his parents divorced shortly thereafter. Raised by his mother, Reeves experienced a lot of movement during his early years. The family moved several times, first to Sydney, then to New York City, before finally settling in Toronto, where he spent the majority of his childhood.

“Because I had trouble reading, I wasn’t a good student,” he said.

“I wasn’t exactly the most well-oiled machine in school,” he reflected.
“I went to four different high schools in five years,” Reeves said. “I was OK academically, good at English and creative writing. I was on the chess team.”

Still, Reeves didn’t fit in.
“It was a really tiny school, and I suppose I didn’t quite fit in,” he shared with the Daily Mail.
“I had my share of disagreements and clashes with the staff. The principal and I never saw things the same way. I was one of those kids who always asked ‘Why?’ – I had too many questions about everything. I just couldn’t help myself, even if it landed me in hot water.
“I craved my independence, and if you tried to impose something on me, we would definitely have an issue.”
Before long, Reeves’ attitude landed him in a predicament he couldn’t escape. At the young age of 16, he was expelled.
“Receiving that letter, telling you that you can’t return to school next year, is just awful. Being asked to leave was incredibly distressing,” Reeves recalled.
However, it turned out to be the motivation he needed to truly unlock his potential in the acting industry. In another interview, the 55-year-old mentioned: “I began taking acting classes in the evenings.”

“It just felt like the right thing to do. A lot of it was out of respect for the craft of acting. I explored some Stanislavsky techniques and experimented with sense memory. I started crashing auditions, landed some roles, and joined a community theater. Eventually, I got an agent.”
