Doctor Shares Eye-Opening MRI Scan Showing What Really Happens To Facial Filler Over Time

A doctor has revealed an MRI scan that shows what can actually happen inside the face after hyaluronic acid filler is injected.

Dr Kami Parsa, an oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon, recently spoke about a case involving a patient who had received 12 syringes of hyaluronic filler over a span of six years.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, injectable hyaluronic acid is a substance that already exists in the body. It is commonly used in cosmetic treatments to soften lines and wrinkles, while also helping create fuller lips and smoother-looking skin.

In a recent video, Dr Parsa explained that when they measured the filler in the 33-year-old patient’s face, it came out to around 28 cubic centimeters. That number was close to double the amount that had originally been injected.

In the clip, Dr Parsa pointed to several green areas visible on the scan, which showed where filler had remained in the face instead of breaking down. He also explained why the total volume appeared much higher than expected.

“What’s interesting here is that when we did volumetric analysis, when we measured the amount of filler, it ended up being close to 28cc which is nearly twice the amount of filler injected. What this shows us is that hyaluronic acid fillers are hydrophilic, that means they love water and they also cause tissue expansion,” he explained.

Dr Parsa later told Newsweek: “We feel that, sometimes, hyaluronic acid fillers have been overused for many years. We felt it’s important to share our findings.”

“We hope that people will learn that less is more when it comes to the HA filler.”

People reacting in the TikTok comments seemed surprised and even concerned by what they saw. One person wrote: “I got my lips done at least 10x since 2018. at first it would dissolve now I haven’t had them done in 3 years and they are still so full.”

Another user shared their own experience, saying: “I got 1ml of lip filler one time 4 years ago and I’m stressed now.”

A third person added their thoughts as well: “I got lip filler ONCE and I’m convinced they are above and below my lips and will never go away.”

When someone asked, ‘how long does it last? I thought it was just for like a year and then it broke down?’ Dr Parsa responded with: “Studies show they can last 10+ years.”

Another person raised a different question, asking: “What’s the best alternative though? I inquired with a surgeon about fat transfer and he was very against it. Said the body would reabsorb 80% of it. Thoughts?”

Dr Parsa replied to that by saying: “Fat transfer if performed right is the best filler.”
