Security Expert Warns Travelers To Avoid Using Black Suitcases

A security expert has explained why choosing a black or dark-colored suitcase may not be the best idea, even though these are some of the most popular options people go for when traveling.

There are still some clear benefits to darker luggage. For example, it tends to last longer in terms of appearance, since it hides scratches, marks, and general wear much better than lighter colors.

It also does a good job of concealing dirt and often gives off a more polished look, which many people prefer, especially when traveling for work or business.

Another advantage of dark luggage, according to UK Luggage, comes down to the way it is perceived.

“Dark luggage gives off a sense of reliability, stability, and sophistication. It’s often associated with practicality and no-nonsense travel,” it claims.

However, while these qualities may seem appealing, security expert and former US Army military policeman Ed Burnett has warned that certain types of luggage, especially designer ones, could actually put travelers at risk.

Speaking to The Independent, he explained: “High-end brands — such as Tumi, Rimowa, Louis Vuitton — are magnets. They signal that the contents are likely as expensive as the bag.”

He also encouraged travelers to think differently when picking luggage, suggesting that bright colors can offer a simple but effective advantage.

“Bright colors are a deterrent. Thieves prefer anonymous black or navy bags because they can walk away with them without standing out,” he said.

“A neon green bag, for example, is a liability for a thief. If you yell, ‘Stop that man with the green bag,’ everyone sees him.”

He also pointed out that the type of suitcase you choose matters just as much as the color, especially when it comes to how easy it is for someone to tamper with it.

“Soft shell bags can be ‘shived’ — where a thief uses a box cutter to slice the fabric and reach in.”

Because of this, he explained that hard shell suitcases offer a much higher level of security. They are far more difficult to cut open, and any attempt to break into them would likely create noise, which could draw attention.

Another common habit that travelers are warned against is wrapping luggage in plastic, even though many believe it adds an extra layer of protection. Some people even pay up to $20 to have their suitcases professionally wrapped before flying.

However, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has made it clear that this does not stop your bag from being checked if needed.

If airport security needs to inspect your luggage, they will simply cut through the plastic to access it, meaning any money or effort spent wrapping it ends up being wasted.
