While celebrating his birthday in Nashville, retired NYPD Detective Daniel Sprague found himself at the center of a shocking confrontation that quickly turned violent. Sprague was wearing a red “Make Fifty Great Again” hat, a gift from his wife, along with a patriotic shirt reading “Making America Great Since 1970.” What began as a casual night with friends ended abruptly when a woman targeted him over the message on his hat.
According to Sprague, the incident occurred outside The Stage on Broadway. He said someone grabbed him from behind, spun him around, and punched him in the face without warning. At first, he assumed it was a friend joking around until he realized he was bleeding. The suddenness of the attack left him stunned. Both Sprague and the woman were escorted out before he could contact police at the scene.
Later, Sprague filed an official report with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The report stated that the suspect ripped the hat from his head and struck him, while Sprague did not retaliate. He noted that earlier reactions to his outfit ranged from smiles to visible anger, but nothing aggressive. Many people, he said, softened once they noticed the hat referenced his age rather than a political slogan.
Following the incident, Sprague shared photos of his injuries on Facebook, expressing disbelief that political expression could provoke violence. He emphasized that while he supports Donald Trump, he respects differing views and would never attack someone over their beliefs. Sprague later deleted the post, saying he was awaiting further contact from Nashville detectives.
