Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been operating in Minneapolis as part of the White House’s wider crackdown, but one interaction on January 7 ended in fatal consequences.
In the immediate aftermath of Good’s death, the Department of Homeland Security claimed she had “weaponized her vehicle” against officers and went as far as calling the incident an act of domestic terrorism.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has said the ICE officer who fired the fatal shot acted recklessly and has firmly rejected federal statements that the shooting was an act of self-defense.
Renee’s mother, Donna Ganger, also spoke out, describing her daughter as “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known” during an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune.
She also shared that Renee’s six-year-old son is now believed to have no one else in his life aside from his grandmother.
Following the incident, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the shooting during a press conference.
Noem said: “Any loss of life is a tragedy and I think all of us can agree that, in this situation, it was preventable.”
She also pushed back against Mayor Frey’s criticism, saying: “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
Footage of the shooting has since begun circulating online, and former President Donald Trump also weighed in on the situation via Truth Social.
Trump said: “I have just viewed the clip of the event which took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a horrible thing to watch.”
Mayor Frey, however, responded bluntly to those claims, stating: “Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bulls**t.”
“This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”
He added: “They are not here to cause safety in this city. What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust.”
