Aging is a process that everyone experiences. However, some individuals, particularly in Hollywood, opt for Botox, facelifts, or plastic surgery to slow it down. This 91-year-old actress has done just that, though some may not recognize her. Her career has lasted over 60 years and continues to attract attention today.

She rose to fame, receiving multiple Academy Award nominations and even winning one. Now at 91, this iconic actress has no intention of slowing her pace.

Born on April 24, 1934, in Richmond, Virginia, she was raised by a mother who taught drama. Her younger brother went on to become a successful director and actor, and by the age of three, she was already on the path to a career in entertainment. The now-legendary actress excelled in ballet and, after finishing high school, relocated to New York City to chase her acting dreams.

Moving to the Big Apple at such a young age might worry many parents. But for her, it was a different story.

“They weren’t surprised. I was in show business since I was 3, basically,” she shared with Variety. “They were so confident that I would be alright, that I became alright,” she added.

“I never realized that I should have confidence. But now I do. Looking back, I wonder, ‘What were they thinking?’ I had a level of what I would describe as sophisticated naivete since I had been attending ballet school since I was three,” she shared.

“During our time in Arlington and Richmond, I often found myself on a bus alone heading to ballet class, learning how to navigate transfers and becoming comfortable with solitude, feeling confident that I would be okay walking home through the forest at night.”

Debut in Hitchcock film

At that stage in her career, she also decided to change her name. After being cast as a chorus girl and understudy to the second lead, Carol Haney, in the Broadway musical The Pajama Game, she was about to get her big break. When Haney injured her ankle, the young woman, who had dedicated her life to ballet, seized the opportunity and stepped into the role.

Film producer Hal Wallis noticed her talent and offered her a contract. This marked the start of a remarkable career that has lasted over 60 years and taken her to extraordinary places.

Her film debut occurred in 1955 when she appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry. Her unique, tomboyish appearance made her a desirable actress in Hollywood, leading to an increasing number of roles.

Not long after, she would receive her first nomination for an Academy Award. Over five years, she garnered three nominations for Best Actress in Some Came Running (1958), The Apartment (1960), and Irma De Douche in 1963. In total, she has received six nominations, and in 1984, she won the Best Actress award for Terms of Endearment.

Additionally, she has won seven Golden Globe Awards and one Emmy Award, but her accomplishments go beyond just acting. She received the Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and in 1998, she was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her significant contributions to entertainment.

The list of accolades is extensive, including the American Film Institute (AFI) Lifetime Achievement Award. However, the individual we are discussing, Shirley MacLaine, is not ready to retire just yet. In February, Deadline reported that the 91-year-old iconic actress is set to star in the upcoming film Margret and Stevie, which focuses on writer and illustrator Margret Rey.

Shirley MacLaine is a genuine icon in the entertainment industry. So, what is the key to her enduring and successful career?

“Even though I speak the truth, I’m not a diva. That stems from my three years of ballet training. I have to trace it all the way back to that, along with hard, honest work, and a good dose of artistry, if you can manage it,” MacLaine shared with Variety in 2020.

I’ve remained in the industry and never considered quitting because I wanted to fund my travels with plane tickets. I didn’t engage in the Hollywood social scene. Instead, I preferred to visit countries I hadn’t explored yet. So when I reflect on my life, I’m uncertain if I wouldn’t prioritize travel over show business.

Praised for down-to-earth personality

The actress has shown that she is truly “one of the people,” not retreating into a lavish mansion or avoiding her fans, who have showered her with affection throughout the years.

As recently as late March, she was spotted relishing a plate of oysters and sipping a beer in Malibu, wearing a mint-green hoodie and black glasses. With her fork raised, she beamed at the camera.

Fans quickly commended Shirley MacLaine for her fantastic outfit and for appearing very approachable.

“Who doesn’t adore this lady? Timeless,” one fan commented.

“Love her! It’s wonderful to see her out enjoying life!” another added.

A third individual remarked, “One of the last of the greats,” while a fourth enthusiastically said, “Looking fabulous at 91 and out having fun, Brilliant.”

Shirley MacLaine has consistently received compliments for her appearance. About 40 years ago, she made the decision to undergo a facelift. The debate over Botox, plastic surgery, and various other procedures has been a hot topic in Hollywood for quite some time. Some individuals choose to leave their faces untouched, while others may go a bit overboard.

Acknowledged her facelift

In a 2007 interview with The Guardian, MacLaine shared her thoughts on plastic surgery and facelifts. She mentioned that her younger brother, the well-known Warren Beatty, was considered “the beautiful one in the family.” As she began to notice wrinkles on her face, she had a clear vision of her next steps.

“Just in the last week, I’m starting to embrace my wrinkles because I was contemplating: should I get Botox? I’m really enjoying the fact that I’m 73 and almost look it,” MacLaine expressed in 2007. “I had a facelift around 30 years ago. I’m pleased I did it. However, everything has returned to how it was now. I do have concerns about gaining weight. Not so much for cosmetic reasons, but for what it signifies for my health. But I won’t opt for liposuction. I prefer to walk on the beach and hike up and down the hills in Malibu.”

Shirley added, “I do stretching exercises for my back and some skeletal issues. These are probably due to dancing in high heels and on cement rather than wood. I was never an exceptional dancer to the point of injuring myself, and I always took care.”

Shirley MacLaine is undoubtedly one of the legends in the history of entertainment. If you believe she is a remarkable actress too, please share this article on Facebook with your friends and family.
