A pregnant dog appeared at my gate one chilly afternoon, obviously upset and in need of assistance. This experience changed our lives, and she was 63 days pregnant and on the verge of childbirth.
Dogs usually carry for 58 to 68 days during pregnancy, and labor can start at 63 days. Discharge, loss of appetite, nesting behavior, and restlessness are indicators of an imminent birth. This dog was probably searching for a secure location to give birth to her pups because she was panting profusely and trying to get comfort.
In a similar circumstance, promptly check the dog’s health for indications of labor, create a calm and secure atmosphere, get guidance from a veterinarian, and keep a close eye on her. Pre-labor, active labor (when puppies are born), and post-birth (placenta delivery) are the three phases of labor in dogs. Provide comfort and support during labor, and be ready for any difficulties, such as protracted labor or breech deliveries.
After the puppies are born, make sure they nurse and keep an eye out for any health problems with the mother and the pups. This encounter reaffirmed the value of empathy, accountability, and the connection we have with animals.
