A Relationship Turned Toxic
Just a year before the life-altering incident, Kayla was trapped in a relationship that was far from normal. Raised by a single mother, she had never truly seen what a healthy, nurturing relationship looked like. At 17, she fell for an older boy who proved to be abusive—physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
“I used to feel like I was his property. He manipulated me so completely that I nearly lost everything and everyone I loved,” she recalls.
Like many teenagers experiencing love for the first time, she clung desperately to hope whenever he promised to change. It was a hope that would come at a lifelong cost.
Despite the trauma she endured, Kayla remembers every detail of the day her life was shattered—October 17, 2017—as vividly as if it happened yesterday.
