Teen Who Hoped To Work With Big Cats Is Mauled To Death By Lion After Climbing Into Zoo Enclosure

A teenager who had always dreamed of working closely with big cats lost his life in a tragic encounter with a lion at a zoo.

Gerson Machado, who lived in Brazil, had reportedly tried to reach Africa in the past by sneaking onto an airplane because he wanted to get near lions and learn how to train them. His dream came to a heartbreaking end when he came face-to-face with one of the animals he admired.

The 19-year-old is said to have entered the lion enclosure at the Arruda Camara Zoobotanical Park in Joao Pessoa on Sunday (November 30). Authorities reported that he scaled a tall wall and climbed down a tree to get inside the restricted area.

Graphic footage shows the moment the lioness lunged at the teen before he even reached the ground, while shocked visitors watched helplessly from behind the glass.Zoo veterinarians later described the lioness as “stressed” and “in shock” after seeing the intruder in her space.

In the video, the lioness, named Leona, is seen resting near the viewing window before suddenly rushing toward the tree as Gerson descends.

The harrowing footage went viral onlineX
After pulling him to the ground, nearby bushes began shaking violently. For a brief moment, Gerson appeared to stand up, emerging from the bushes, but he quickly vanished from sight again.

Authorities later confirmed that he died from his injuries shortly after the attack.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the park explained that euthanizing Leona “was never considered,” noting that she had shown no aggressive behavior outside of reacting to the intruder during the tragic incident. The Sun reported that Gerson grew up in the care system and had long struggled with mental health challenges. Over the years, he had told social workers that he dreamed of living among Africa’s wildlife and caring for lions.

Child protection worker Veronica Oliveira spoke in an Instagram video about supporting Gerson for eight years and recalled how he had once been caught trying to board a plane so he could “go on safari to Africa to look after lions.”

“I thanked God when I was warned by the airport that you had cut the fence and got inside the landing gear compartment of a Gol Airlines plane,” she said.“I thanked God because they saw on the cameras that there was a teenager there before a tragedy happened.”

She also shared that his childhood involved poverty and a family history of mental illness, and said that he “should have been in treatment” given what he had been through.

She said: “Gerson was a child who suffered violations of his rights.”“He was the son of a mother with schizophrenia, with grandparents who also had mental health issues.”

Oliveira added: “Gerson’s story is that of a boy who just wanted to get to know Africa to tame lions.”

The lioness pounced as the teen used a tree to gain entry into the enclosureX
“He discovered too late that a lion isn’t a domestic cat and that we can’t tame them without the right knowledge.”“Sadly he wasn’t sensible enough for that.”

City officials announced that the zoo would stay closed while authorities conduct a full investigation. They added: “The man killed scaled a 20ft wall and managed to get into the animal enclosure using one of the trees.”

“According to police it was a possible act of suicide.”“Although security staff tried to stop him, he acted very quickly and died as a result of the injuries the lioness inflicted on him”

“We would like to express our solidarity with the family of the victim of this regrettable incident.”

The zoo later issued another statement on Instagram, calling the entire situation “extremely sad” and offering condolences.“We reiterate that the park follows rigorous technical standards and safety protocols, and we are fully cooperating with all responsible bodies to clarify the facts,” the zoo added.
