Johnny Depp’s televised defamation trial against Heard in 2022 captivated the world, and had an impact on his reputation even though the jury mostly sided with him
Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz are reconnecting for another Hollywood film after both starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the Murder on the Orient Express.
The two will lead the upcoming thriller film Day Drinker as this will be the first major studio movie that Johnny has snagged since the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Day Drinking is about “a cruise ship bartender” and “a mysterious day drinker” who “find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways,” a statement from Lionsgate reads, per People.

Now that the dust has settled, and Johnny was cleared of many of Amber’s disturbing allegations, Johnny’s returning to the silver screen. It’s befitting that he’s getting back in the swing of things with Penelope since she submitted declarations on Johnny’s behalf in 2020.
Johnny and Penelope have starred in a couple of movies together already
The Oscar-winning artist said that she hadn’t seen Johnny engage in violent behavior.
“Many years have passed and I have not only made 3 movies with him, but I also count on him as a great friend,” Penelope’s court documents read. “I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humor.”
Penelope posted a selfie of her and Johnny when they were at the San Sebastian Film Festival. At the San Sebastian Film Festival, Johnny premiered the film Modi, The Three Days on the Wing of Madness as a director.
In a San Sebastian Film Festival press conference in September, Johnny seemed to allude to his defamation trial, divulging how he personally connected to his movie’s subject, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
“Each has their story. Sure, we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there,” Johnny explained during the conference. “I think we’ve all been through a number of things, ultimately. Maybe yours wasn’t, didn’t turn into a soap opera, televised, in fact.”
Though Day Drinker is set to be Johnny’s big comeback, he did star in the French Movie Jeanne Du Barry, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. It premiered in the U.S. in May. Another project that Johnny is working on in addition to Day Drinker is the animated movie Johnny Puff: Secret Mission.
Amber now lives a quite life in Madrid, Spain, along with her daughter Oonagh Paige following her legal battle with Johnny.
