Julia Roberts’ “Provocative” 2025 Thriller Teased By Director: “The Best Performance She’s Ever Given”

Julia Roberts has had many extraordinary performances in her career. Her role in Erin Brockovich (2000) won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, and her performances in Steel Magnolias (1990), Pretty Woman (1991), and August: Osage County (2014) earned Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations. Roberts is best known for romantic comedies, but she has also starred in biographical films, dramas, and even thrillers. After all, Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Ocean’s Twelve (2004) saw her dive into a world of heists.

Her Hollywood career began with an uncredited role in 1987’s Firehouse, and she has since gone on to star in dozens of movies. She has, of course, also taken on roles in the TV landscape as well. She starred in HomecomingGaslit, and in one-off appearances in Law & Order and Miami Vice. Her next role will be her first since the divisive Leave the World Behind (2023), and it should be a masterful performance.

What Julia Robert’s Performance Means For After The Hunt

Roberts Is The Biggest Draw After The Hunt Has

After the Hunt is Roberts’ next major production. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Challengers), the thriller will follow a college professor struggling to reckon with allegations about her colleague. Alongside Roberts’ Alma Olsson, it stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Michael Stuhlbarg (The Shape of Water), and more. While all are exceptional actors, Guadagnino spoke on the WTF with Marc Maron Podcast about Roberts’ role in particular. He had nothing but praise for her. Check out his quote below (via World of Reel):

[After The Hunt] is about what happens in the milieu of academia between older and younger people. It tackles the idea of consent. The movie is very provocative… I’ve been a fan of Julia forever. As a movie star, she has something that not everybody has, and, I’m trying not to be presumptive, but I feel like this is the best performance she’s ever given.

As Roberts is already an Oscar-winning actor, who has also won at the British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Awards, it is hard to imagine a performance that can rival her legendary role in Erin Brockovich (2000). If she can manage to rival that, then Roberts is likely to add more awards to her shelf. Unfortunately, After the Hunt does not yet have a release date or a trailer, so it will be some time before any insight into her portrayal is offered. Still, the movie is expected to be released sometime in 2025, so news should be coming soon.

There Is No Way To Tell The Voracity

Without a trailer, there is no way to say just how accurate Guadagnino’s comments are. The movie began production in July, so he has certainly had enough time to review her portrayal, but it is also likely that he could be marketing his movie. Roberts is an incredible actor, but any claim that an upcoming role will be her best should be viewed with skepticism. Until more information about After the Hunt is released, this claim will remain dubious. Still, given that Roberts has hardly lost her touch, it could mark her first major Academy Awards run since 2014.
