It was a rainy day in Georgia when Courtney and her husband, Russell, looked out their car window and noticed a desperate face in the grass. Despite the bad weather and the location, Russell hopped right out of his seat, eager to help.
“[We’re] on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere,” Courtney said in a video taken at the time.
Russell warily approached the stray pup but soon realized he didn’t have to worry. The dog wasn’t scared at all. In fact, she was over the moon with excitement.
“This dog jumps all over him and licks him,” Courtney said in a video for The Dodo. “Russell picked her up, hugged her.”
Watching Russell carry the pup to the car, Courtney could tell they’d done the right thing.
“She was shaking,” Courtney said. “It’s like she knew he was a good person with good intent and that she was going to be taken care of in that very moment.”
Courtney and Russell brought the dog, later named Romee, to PetSmart for food and supplies. Romee hungrily munched on her new snacks, licking the bowl clean.
The couple then took Romee to a veterinarian to make sure she was in good health and to see if she had a microchip. When the vet told them that Romee didn’t have a chip or any sign of a home, Courtney and Russell knew what they had to do.
“We took her home,” Courtney said. “She was a little shy at first. It took her about two days to fully feel comfortable.”
Now, Romee spends most of her time cuddling with her family. She especially loves her dad, who saved her life.
“I love watching Romee and my husband because their relationship is unmatched,” Courtney said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
