Tina Holland likes using her lunch breaks to walk her three dogs around her small office in Texas. On one recent lunchtime jaunt, Holland realized her pups had found something.
“As I followed their gaze, my heart dropped — there, trembling and crawling on her belly, was the tiniest puppy I’ve ever seen,” Holland told The Dodo. “She looked utterly terrified and desperate for help.”
Surveying the area, Holland quickly put the pieces together.
“I noticed a box sitting next to the dumpster,” Holland said. “Inside were a pee pad and a toy, remnants of a life that was so abruptly abandoned. It broke my heart to think that someone had left this defenseless little soul there, just 75 feet away from a busy road.”
Holland gently scooped the puppy off the ground and tucked her safely into the warmth of her hooded sweatshirt, allowing the pup’s head to peek out for fresh air.
“She was shaking, either from fear or the cold,” Holland said. “I completed my walk, cradling her close.”
Back at the office, Holland offered the dog some water. She checked the pup for obvious injuries and fleas and found that the little girl was in good condition. Holland knew the dog needed expert care, so she reached out to Dawgs Fight Back, a rescue organization. Soon, the dog had a temporary home, lots of new friends and a new name — Peeka.
“She’s fantastic!” Dawgs Fight Back director Alyson McDonnell told The Dodo. “Peeka has such a silly and sweet personality. She spends her mornings running outside with our big dogs. They chase each other or various bugs that fly by.”
McDonnell thinks Peeka will thrive best with an active family, perhaps one with kids or another dog for her to play with. According to McDonnell, Peeka gets along with everyone and loves being the center of attention.
Rescuers know that Peeka is poised to be someone’s new best friend. Now, this resilient little dog just needs to sit back and wait for the perfect person to find her.
