Late last year, dog rescuer Karla Schneider Boss got a call about a blind puppy wandering around a busy street. Unable to see where she was going, the tiny dog had almost gotten run over by a car.
“I can’t imagine a little puppy [that] size in the middle of the street, but especially a blind puppy,” dog rescue Frankie Lola and Friends wrote on Instagram.
Boss named the puppy Madison and took her home. At first, Madison was struggling a bit, running into furniture and bumping into corners. But knowing she was safe with Boss helped her feel comfortable trying new things.
“She was so cute and so brave,” Boss told The Dodo. “She’s like, ‘I’ll figure this out. I got it.’”
A week after Madison arrived at Boss’ home, something incredible happened: Boss rescued Madison’s sister, whom she named Sissy. As soon as Madison was reunited with her littermate, she instantly seemed happier and more at ease.
“[I]t was like they hadn’t even been apart,” Boss said. “It was adorable.”
Boss took care of both Madison and Sissy, helping them grow up from tiny puppies into strong adolescent dogs. She loved watching them take care of each other and comfort each other. So when an adopter named Cynthia Howard decided to take Sissy home but not Madison, it was a bittersweet moment.
As Howard got to know Sissy, she never forgot about Madison and kept wondering how she was doing.
“I kept seeing puppy Madison pop up,” Howard told The Dodo. “She wasn’t getting adopted. And so I had talked to my husband over months, ‘What if we adopted her sister?’ And he was like, ‘Sure!’”
For the second time in their lives, Madison and Sissy, whose names were changed to Zoey and Lulu, were reunited. Once again, they picked up right where they left off, spending their days cuddling and playing together.
Howard has been going out of her way to make sure Zoey thrives in her new environment.
“We did everything we could to start on the best foot possible,” Howard wrote on Instagram. “I put bells on the doors and different scents around the house. Got rid of our pointy coffee table, and the kids moved all of their toys upstairs.”
Of course, Lulu has been a big help in reassuring Zoey and encouraging her to gain confidence.
“[Zoey] is SO capable and it’s been such an inspiration to watch her grow,” Howard wrote.
Now that Lulu and Zoey are rejoined at the hip, they can rest assured that nothing’s ever going to separate them again.
