Mia the Five-Legged Puppy Seeks Support for Life-Changing Surgeries at Animal Shelter

Meet Mia, a charming  puppy born with a rare condition that sets her apart. Unusually, Mia has five legs and two tails, a result of a rare congenital anomaly.

Initially, her previous owners realized they could not provide the necessary specialized care and therapy Mia would need.

Fortunately, the compassionate team at Casas Cunas Animal Shelter stepped in and took responsibility for Mia’s care. As a young  puppy, just two months old, Mia faces some medical challenges.

She will need deworming due to her bloated stomach, and further assessments have revealed additional complications.

Her extra paw and tails are located near her belly, and she also has two vaginas and two anuses, utilizing both for her bodily functions.

The shelter is actively seeking donations to support Mia’s upcoming surgeries. However, before proceeding with any operations, doctors plan to conduct thorough X-rays and ultrasounds to determine the best course of medical intervention.

Interestingly, Mia’s condition resembles that of Skipper, another puppy treated at Neel Veterinary Hospital in 2021.

In Skipper’s case, it was believed that the puppy was initially meant to have a twin, but they did not separate fully, resulting in the puppy’s extra limbs and organs. Mia’s condition might be a similar congenital birth defect.

Five days into her journey at the shelter, Mia is scheduled for two surgeries, with the first one planned for tomorrow. She has been receiving continuous veterinary care, and recent health reports are promising.

Despite the complexities and high costs of her treatment, there is optimism that Mia will lead a long and happy life.

By sharing Mia’s story, the animal shelter hopes to raise awareness and financial aid from animal activists and the caring public to help cover the expenses of her necessary surgeries.
