Abandoned Puppy Found in Texas Rainstorm—Too Weak to Move, Covered in Parasites

When the storm moved through South Texas, it hit with force—drenching neighborhoods, flooding parks, and bending trees in half under the weight of wind and rain. It was the kind of storm most would shelter from. But for one small puppy, there was no shelter. Just a muddy, flooded field and a wet onion sack to lie on.

He had no collar, no one in sight, and no way to call for help. Animal Control officers were sent out after someone reported seeing a stray near a baseball field. At first, officers scanned the area and saw nothing but swirling puddles and wind-blown debris—until they spotted the purple flag.

Near the fence line, half-submerged in water, sat an old onion sack—and curled on top of it was a tiny, motionless puppy. He was soaked to the bone, too cold to shiver, and covered in ticks that clung to every inch of his fragile frame. The officers moved closer. Still, he didn’t bark or run. He just waited.

A Silent Plea for Help

The puppy was estimated to be about 10 weeks old. His skin was raw from flea bites, and his eyes were crusted shut with infection. His belly and gums were pale from blood loss, and it was clear he hadn’t eaten anything substantial in days. Rescuers believe he may have tried to survive by chewing on plastic or scavenging trash.

Officer Erica gently lifted him from the waterlogged grass. The puppy didn’t resist, only folded into her arms.

“He just sat there, soaked, shivering, completely frozen,” said Patti Dawson, president of Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform (Dallas Dog RRR), in an interview with Newsweek. “It was like he’d already given up—but was still hoping someone might come.”

They named him Slugger and rushed him into emergency care. He was placed in an incubator to regulate his body temperature and closely monitored for signs of organ failure or shock.

One Day at a Time

Now under the watchful eye of a medical foster in South Texas—who also happens to be a nurse—Slugger is receiving everything he needs to survive. His care includes fluids, de-wormers, antibiotics, and medicated baths to soothe his irritated skin. The ticks are being removed as safely as possible, though the volume of them has made the process slow and painful.

“He’s still dealing with severe anemia,” Dawson shared. “His appetite has returned, which is encouraging, and we’re seeing glimmers of brightness in his eyes. But recovery will take time.”

Scabs still line his legs and belly. Worms are being treated, but weakness lingers. The road ahead remains uncertain—but for the first time, Slugger has a fighting chance.

A Second Chance Is Coming

His story has struck a chord online, drawing support from people around the country. Many were horrified by the conditions he endured and heartened by the care he’s now receiving. “Thank you for not giving up on him,” one follower wrote. “He deserves the world.”

Dallas Dog RRR plans to transport Slugger to North Texas once he’s stable enough. When his medical treatment is complete, he’ll be placed for adoption. Dawson is hopeful they’ll find a home as loyal as the pup who waited without protest, through thunder and rain, for someone to find him.

“He’s a tough little guy,” she said. “He deserves more than survival—he deserves love.”

The Kindness That Makes All the Difference

In 2024, more than 7 million animals entered shelters across the U.S., a troubling rise from the previous year. But statistics don’t tell the story that Slugger does. He reminds us what abandonment looks like—and what compassion can do.

From a cold field to warm arms, from silence to safety, Slugger’s journey is a testament to resilience and the people willing to fight for animals who can’t speak for themselves.

Sometimes, all it takes is someone looking twice.
