Sydney Sweeney Criticized Over ‘Disturbing’ Jeans Ad That Sparked Major Backlash

Sydney Sweeney has landed in hot water after starring in a jeans campaign that many are calling both ‘disturbing’ and ‘racially insensitive’.The 27-year-old actress was chosen as the face of American Eagle’s Fall 2025 denim campaign — but the reaction hasn’t exactly been positive.

According to AE, this campaign is meant to help solidify its image as the go-to jeans brand for Gen Z. But instead of talking about the jeans, people online are calling out what they say is a troubling focus on Sweeney’s whiteness, which has put both the brand and the actress at the center of controversy.

In the ad, Sweeney is dressed head to toe in denim and is seen posting a sign with the words: “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.”Right after that, the word ‘Genes’ is scratched out and replaced with ‘jeans’—a play on words that has not gone over well.

Many took to social media to voice their frustration. Some say the wordplay is more than just tone-deaf — they believe it hints at white supremacist language and ideas.

“This is what happens when you have no people of color in a room. Particularly in a time like this.” wrote one angry commenter on Instagram. “This ad campaign got so caught up in this ‘clever’ play on words and this stunt the people in the room missed what was so blatantly obvious to anyone not White.”Someone else chimed in with: “It’s giving ‘Subtle 1930’s Germany’.” while another added sarcastically: “Eujeanics.”

Salon also reported that the phrase ‘great genes’ has historically been tied to praising whiteness, thinness, and conventional beauty standards. The outlet called the campaign a seriously ‘tone-deaf marketing move’.

Former President Donald Trump sparked similar outrage in 2020 after making a controversial remark to a mostly white crowd in Minnesota. He said: “You have good genes, you know that, right?”“You have good genes. A lot of it is about the genes, isn’t it, don’t you believe? The racehorse theory. You think we’re so different? You have good genes in Minnesota.”

At the time, members of the local Jewish community condemned the comments, saying they sounded eerily similar to the kind of ‘race science’ rhetoric used by Nazis. Now, many are drawing comparisons between that and the American Eagle campaign. Dozens of social media users said the ad felt like it was applauding the so-called ‘good genes’ of a white, blue-eyed, blonde woman.

“People not realizing the eugenics ideology behind Sydney Sweeney’s jeans ad is like very terrifying you guys desperately need to grow a brain,” wrote one user.

“Holy s**t that American Eagle Sydney Sweeney jeans ad is f**king disturbing.” added another.

One marketing expert on TikTok, who goes by vital_media_marketing, pointed out that the ad’s cinematography seemed to frame Sweeney’s appearance — from her face to her body in a way that highlighted her ‘family tree and inherited features’.She continued: “Praising Sydney Sweeney for her ‘great genes’ in the context of her white, blonde hair, blue-eye appearance, is is one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we’ve seen and heard in a while.”

Still, not everyone agrees. On Twitter, one person defended the ad, saying: “I’m not sure how to say this nicely but if you think a jeans ad with a pun about Sydney Sweeney being pretty is a nazi dogwhistle you genuinely need to put the phone down for a while.”

While the campaign has enraged many, some have been defending it and Sweeney’s involvementAmerican Eagle
Some critics argued that the ad could have landed better if it had included a more diverse group of people, all sharing the same tagline — which could’ve showcased a wider range of nationalities and skin tones.Meanwhile, Jennifer Foyle, President and Executive Creative Director of American Eagle Outfitters Inc., shared her thoughts on the campaign, saying: “With Sydney Sweeney front and center, she brings the allure, and we add the flawless wardrobe for the winning combo of ease, attitude and a little mischief.”

Sweeney also spoke about her role in the project, adding: “There is something so effortless about American Eagle – it’s the perfect balance of being put-together but still feeling like yourself.”
