Terrifying Simulation Recreates Moment A Woman ‘Woke Up At Her Own Funeral’ Right Before Burial

Try to picture being placed in a coffin while you’re still breathing. Sounds absolutely horrifying, right? Most of us couldn’t even begin to imagine that. But reportedly, this nightmare became real for one woman more than a century ago.

Back in 1915, a 30-year-old woman named Essie Dunbar suffered a seizure, and a doctor at the time officially declared her dead.

As is common when someone passes away, her family immediately arranged a funeral to lay her to rest. Just one day later, they placed Essie’s body in a coffin and began the burial process.

Essie’s body had already been placed underground, but when her sister showed up late to the service, she insisted they dig her sister back up so she could say goodbye in person.

Her sister was fully expecting to find a lifeless body when the coffin was reopened. But what happened next completely shocked everyone who witnessed it.

According to the story, when the lid was removed, Essie suddenly sat up and gave her sister a big smile — as if she had never passed away in the first place.

Her family, understandably, was stunned. Some were so scared they actually took off running because they believed they were looking at a ghost.

It’s been said that the ministers who were conducting the service were also in such shock that they accidentally stumbled into the grave. One of them reportedly broke several bones during the chaos.

Fast forward to modern times — YouTuber Zack D. Films recently created a video that shows a visual simulation of what might have happened during that eerie and unforgettable moment.

Take a look at it here:

Essie’s strange and chilling story caught people’s attention again in 2001 when it was included in a book called Buried Alive: The Terrifying History of Our Most Primal Fear.

According to the book, and as shared by Snopes: “In the summer of 1915, Dr. D. K. Briggs of Blackville, South Carolina, was called to attend the thirty-year-old black woman Essie Dunbar, who had suffered an attack of epilepsy. He found no signs of life and declared her dead.”

“The corpse was put in a wooden coffin and the funeral arranged for eleven in the following morning, to give Essie’s sister, who lived in a neighboring town, the chance to participate.”

“Although the ceremony was a lengthy one, with three preachers taking turns to perform, the sister had still not arrived when Essie’s coffin was lowered into its six-foot-deep grave.”

The book continues with even more shocking details: “She appeared a few minutes later, however, and the ministers agreed to dig up the coffin so that she might see Essie one last time. But when the screws were removed and the coffin lid opened, Essie sat up in her coffin and smiled at her sister.”

After Essie unexpectedly returned to life, her story sparked a lot of fear and speculation. Some people in her community even started to believe she might be a zombie because of what had happened.

Despite the bizarre and terrifying experience, Essie continued to live for many more years. She eventually passed away for good in 1955, bringing her unbelievable story to a final close.
