George and Norma Strait: A Love Story for the Ages
It’s funny how the person you once overlooked can become the center of your whole world. For George Strait, that person was Norma—the girl from his hometown who would become the love of his life. George admits she was the first woman he ever truly loved.
Growing up in Pearsall, Texas, the two had known each other forever. “I never really thought much about her,” George recalled in an interview with Houston’s 100.3 The Bull. “But one day, I asked her out, and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a while after that, but eventually I realized, ‘I’m missing the boat here.’ That’s when we started dating again.”

Norma gave him a second chance, and the couple eloped in Mexico on December 4, 1971, shortly before George joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii. To celebrate with family, they also had a small church ceremony back home in Pearsall.

Not long after, their daughter Jenifer Lynn Strait was born in 1972, followed by their son, George “Bubba” Strait Jr., in 1981. Around the same time, George’s music career began to take off. After performing with an Army band called Rambling Country, he scored his first chart hit in 1981 and landed his first No. 1 with “Fool Hearted Memory” in 1982—a milestone that marked the start of one of country music’s most successful careers.
Weathering Life’s Storms
Their marriage, like any, has faced hardships. In 1986, tragedy struck when 13-year-old Jenifer died in a car accident in San Marcos, Texas. Though George rarely speaks about the loss, he has called the years they had with her a blessing. Despite the heartbreak, George and Norma leaned on each other and endured, their bond only deepening with time.
Today, they’re enjoying life as proud grandparents. Their son Bubba and his wife, Tamara, welcomed George Strait III (affectionately nicknamed “Harvey”) in 2012, and daughter Jilliann Louise in 2016.
From high school acquaintances to lifelong partners, George and Norma Strait’s love story is one of country music’s greatest—and it continues to inspire fans as a testament to enduring devotion.
