Why James Van Der Beek Chose to Share His Cancer Diagnosis with His Kids: “They Know When Dad’s in Pain”

James Van Der Beek is reflecting on how he told his six children about his stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis.

Eight months after going public with his condition, the 48-year-old actor opened up about how he and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, approached the difficult conversation with their kids.

“I’m no expert,” he admitted during an appearance on the Today show on Wednesday, July 30, “but our approach was to be as honest as possible — honest in a way they could understand. Because they can sense what’s going on.”

The Dawson’s Creek alum explained that his children are highly intuitive. “They know when Dad’s having a rough day. They can feel if something’s wrong,” he said, referring to his daughters Olivia (14), Annabel (11), Emilia (9), Gwendolyn (6), and sons Joshua (13) and Jeremiah (2). “If you don’t talk to them about it, I think it ends up being more confusing for them.”

Van Der Beek also offered words of encouragement for other parents navigating similar challenges. He emphasized the strength and emotional insight children often show when given the opportunity.

“When you explain what’s happening and how you’re facing it, they really get it,” he said. “Your journey becomes theirs in a way, and they want to support you.”

He shared a touching example of that support: “My kids are the ones making me tea, asking, ‘What do you need, Dad?’ There’s been so much beauty in that. But I’d love to help others avoid this path — which is why I’m encouraging everyone to get screened.”

As for his current condition, Van Der Beek shared a positive update: “I feel great. Today’s a good day,” he said. “It’s been a real journey — filled with ups and downs and a lot of uncertainty. Cancer is like a full-time job.”

Back in November, in an interview with People magazine, Van Der Beek also spoke candidly about his experience, expressing gratitude for the love and support he’s received throughout his health battle.
