In Nashville, Tennessee, obstetrician-gynecologist Paul Locus delivered his patient’s baby while dressed as the Joker from The Dark Knight. But he wasn’t in this unusual outfit because he had lost his mind—he was simply celebrating Halloween with his colleagues.
Brittany Self’s due date was originally set for November 5, but on the morning of October 31, her water broke, prompting her and her husband to rush to the hospital. There, they were met by Dr. Locus in full Joker attire. After examining Brittany, he determined that labor would take a few more hours and offered to go home, change into his regular scrubs, and return with a serious, professional demeanor.
However, the Selfs saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and convinced the doctor to stay in costume. Locus agreed and delivered the baby while fully in character as the Joker. The unforgettable moment was captured in photos and videos by the baby’s father, Justin Self.
The couple welcomed a baby girl, Oaklyn Sage. A few hours after her birth, Dr. Locus—now without the makeup and costume—visited the new parents and their daughter in their hospital room, jokingly apologizing for “missing” the birth. As a memento, he gave them a congratulatory card signed, Dr. Joker.
Oaklyn Sage is the third child for Justin and Brittany, which might explain why the sight of the Joker delivering their baby didn’t faze them—they’ve probably seen it all by now!
