A tragic plane crash in García, Nuevo León, claimed the life of journalist and TV host Débora Estrella. The light aircraft, registration XB-BGH, went down near the Pesquería River on September 20, 2025. Authorities confirmed that Estrella and pilot Bryan Leonardo Ballesteros Argueta died in the accident. Hours before, she had shared a photo of the plane on Instagram.
Her ex-husband, journalist José Luis García, unknowingly reported on the crash as part of his routine coverage. He posted, “Light aircraft crashes,” without realizing Estrella was on board. Social media users quickly linked her to the tragedy, citing her Instagram post. Facing speculation and backlash, García deleted his post later that night and has remained silent publicly.
Estrella, 43, was well known as the host of Telediario Matutino in Monterrey since 2018 and also collaborated with Milenio TV and Channel 6. Passionate about aviation, she often expressed admiration for those working in the field.
Her relationship with García began in Monterrey, where she worked for TV Azteca and he for Televisa. Their romance lasted more than 15 years, ten of them as husband and wife. Though they kept their private life discreet, their social media posts reflected joy and companionship, from trips to Disneyland to birthday celebrations.
In 2019, Estrella wrote warmly of García: “There is no one more amazing, intense, or alive than you. I only wish you more trips around the sun.” The couple, however, never had children and focused instead on their careers and shared moments together.
They announced their divorce in January 2020 with a joint statement, calling it the end of “the story we started writing together ten years ago.” Both emphasized mutual respect and privacy.
A year later, García publicly reflected on the separation, saying, “I hold on to the best of those 15 years we spent together.” He explained that they ended things peacefully, even finalizing their divorce “in less than five minutes while still in the same car.”
Despite rumors surrounding his new relationship soon after, García insisted it was not the cause of their split. He maintained that both had simply chosen different paths, parting on amicable terms—an ending now overshadowed by Estrella’s tragic death.
