Blossom MacDonald, born Edith Marie Blossom MacDonald on August 21, 1895, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American actress most famous for her portrayal of Grandmama on the iconic TV series The Addams Family (1964–1966). Coming from a family of performers, including her sister Jeanette MacDonald, a renowned Hollywood singer and actress, Blossom took a different route, focusing on comedic and character-driven roles rather than musicals.
Blossom’s career began in vaudeville before transitioning to Hollywood films in the 1930s. She appeared in smaller roles, often portraying warm, motherly figures or quirky characters. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she appeared in films like Dr. Kildare’s Wedding Day (1941) and The Red Stallion (1947), earning a reputation as a dependable character actress known for her charm and comedic flair.
Her breakout role came in 1964 when she was cast as Grandmama in The Addams Family. Her portrayal of the eccentric and mischievous matriarch of the strange family was a hit, and despite the show’s brief two-season run, it became a cult classic. Blossom’s performance remains an unforgettable part of the series.
Later in life, health issues, including a stroke that affected her speech, prevented her from reprising her role in future Addams Family projects. Nonetheless, she remained a beloved figure among fans. Blossom Rock passed away on January 14, 1978, at age 82, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be celebrated, particularly her role as Grandmama, which still brings joy to Addams Family fans today.
