Power Line Explosion Sends Ryder Cup Fans Running at Bethpage Black
Opening day of the Ryder Cup 2025 in Long Island, New York, got off to a chaotic start when a power line exploded near the entrance of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course on Friday, September 26.
Sparks and flames shot from the line before a loud blast sent golf fans scrambling for safety. The frightening scene unfolded as crowds gathered outside the course, located in Farmingdale, about 35 miles east of New York City.
The dramatic moment was caught on video by Nicholas Teigen and shared on X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, the power line bursts into flames before erupting with a sharp “zap,” startling onlookers. Teigen joked in his caption: “Even the power grid at Bethpage couldn’t handle the Ryder Cup tension. Come on Europe!”
Officials have not yet determined what caused the explosion, but no injuries were reported. Despite the scare, Ryder Cup events continued as scheduled.
