Authorities in Colorado have confirmed that two young hunters tragically lost their lives after being struck by lightning during an elk hunting trip. Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin stated that preliminary findings indicate Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, both 25, were killed while in the Rio Grande National Forest.
The incident underscores the unpredictable dangers of outdoor adventures, especially in mountainous regions where weather can change rapidly. Coroner Martin noted that the injuries were consistent with a “pretty intense electrical jolt,” including small burn marks typical of lightning-related incidents. While preliminary findings point to a lightning strike, full autopsy reports are expected within eight weeks.

Porter and Stasko were reported missing on September 13 after failing to return from their trip along the Rio de Los Pinos Trailhead. Their vehicle, with camping gear and personal items inside, indicated they were prepared for an extended stay. Heavy rain and rough terrain complicated the search, which involved air crews, dog teams, drones, and local volunteers. On September 18, rescuers located their bodies, bringing the search to a heartbreaking conclusion.
Family members confirmed the tragic news shortly afterward. Porter’s fiancée, Bridget Murphy, shared that he had sent updates up until his final message. Both families remembered Porter and Stasko as skilled outdoorsmen, though the unpredictability of mountain weather proved fatal.
