Manal and Mirhi had a very uncommon birth defect in Pakistan: they were united at the head. The girls’ case was particularly challenging because they shared a complex circulatory system and a skull bone.
These births happen roughly once every 60,000 babies, and very few of them make it to the point when surgery is feasible.
Together with medical professionals, the parents decided to try to separate their daughters when Manal and Mirhi reached three. This was a decision that would change their lives.
An international medical team oversaw the procedure and preparation after they were sent to Bilkent City Hospital in Ankara.
The girls’ therapy was made possible by the doctors’ prior expertise with the successful separation of comparable twins.
It took several months to prepare: using mixed reality technology, doctors were able to practice every step in detail by creating three-dimensional replicas of the twins’ brain and skull.
The final portion of the two-stage surgery took almost 14 hours to complete. The vascular system and meninges had to be meticulously separated before the physicians could rebuild both girls’ craniums.
Even though it was extremely risky, the operation was successful. Manal and Mirhi started breathing on their own and reacting to their environment in a matter of days.
Physicians estimate that they will live a full life and observe that their recuperation is going more quickly than anticipated. The girls are currently receiving rehabilitation, progressively learning how to sit and walk on their own.
For the parents, being able to hold each daughter in their arms for the first time is a wonderful miracle.
