**Check Your Receipt**

I accidentally left my receipt at the self-checkout machine.

A woman rushed over, handing it to me with a kind smile.

“You dropped this,” she said.

I thanked her, thinking nothing of it, and went on my way.

Later that evening, I unpacked my groceries, humming softly to myself — milk, bread, pasta, the usual. As I was cleaning up, I noticed the receipt sitting on the counter. Something caught my eye.

On the back, written in **hurried, shaky handwriting**, were three words:

**“Check your car.”**

My heart skipped.

I stood frozen for a second, wondering if it was some kind of prank. Then a strange feeling crept up my spine — that uneasy sense you get when you realize something isn’t quite right.

I grabbed my keys and cautiously looked outside through the window. My car sat under the streetlight, quiet, still. I almost laughed at myself for being paranoid. But curiosity — or maybe fear — pushed me to go check.

As I got closer, I noticed the faint reflection of movement inside. My stomach dropped.

I slowly opened the door — and there, crouched behind the passenger seat, was a man.

He bolted as soon as I screamed, sprinting off into the dark before I could even react. I stood shaking, realizing what had just happened — and what could have.

The woman at the store must have noticed him following me. Instead of causing a scene, she found a quiet, clever way to warn me — by writing on the receipt.

I never even got to thank her properly.

But I still keep that receipt in my wallet — a small, crumpled reminder that sometimes, **a stranger’s quick thinking can save your life.**
