Henry Winkler shares house rules his 7 grandkids must follow

Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli may have had his own cool code, but when the iconic Henry Winkler invites his grandchildren over, there are still a few basic rules that everyone follows.

The cherished Happy Days star, now at 80, has swapped his leather jackets for story time, and the role he values most today is being “Papa” to his expanding family.

‘Incredible’ family

Henry Winkler, who was just 29 when he first won the hearts of viewers in 1974 as the effortlessly charming Fonzie, has crafted a life that goes well beyond his television success. Over the years, he has nurtured a close-knit family with his wife Stacey Weitzman, whom he wed in May 1978.

Together, they raised their children Max, 42, and Zoe, 46, along with Stacey’s son Jed, 55, from a previous relationship.

Today, that family has grown even more, with Winkler joyfully embracing his role as a grandfather to seven: India, Ace, Lulu, Jules, Gus, Francis Joan, and the newest addition, who will arrive in 2024, courtesy of his son Max and daughter-in-law Jessica Barden.

“We have [seven] incredible grandchildren, and they bring so much joy to your life,” Winkler expressed.

‘Totally different from being a parent’

Henry Winkler notes that being a grandfather is a completely different experience compared to parenting.

Despite having years of parenting under his belt, he describes grandparenting as a unique journey, filled with both familiarity and new experiences.

In a conversation with People, the star of Barry revealed that the emotional bond remains just as strong, even if the responsibilities feel lighter and more joyful.

“Being a grandparent is entirely different from being a parent,” Winkler remarked, “but it carries the same emotional weight.”

Winkler also pointed out that each of his grandchildren contributes a unique personality to the family, enriching the overall experience.

“Each one of them is unique. You need to interact with each one in a completely different way.”

Simple house rules

While he is a loving grandpa, Winkler emphasizes that he doesn’t indulge the kids excessively and has established some firm rules for when they visit his home.

“The house rules, and there are just a few, remain consistent,” he shared with People. “When the youngest granddaughter is napping, there’s no fighting or yelling. They are responsible for their friends to keep the noise down.”

Another rule applies to everyone, no matter their age.

“Regardless of their age, from 14 to 7, they must clear their own dishes.”

TikTok stars

This small yet significant rule embodies the values Winkler promotes at home, where respect and responsibility are integral to daily life, while laughter and connection are always present.

The Golden Globe winner clearly cherishes his grandchildren and frequently includes them in entertaining TikTok videos they make together, highlighting how much he loves spending time with them.

“I’m only on TikTok with my grandkids,” Winkler mentioned. “My oldest granddaughter, India, told me, ‘Papa, you need to make a TikTok.’ So far, I think I’ve created about 7 or 8, but mostly with them.”

These joyful moments showcase the strong bond he has with the younger generation, a relationship that continues to flourish as his grandchildren partake in more of life’s unforgettable experiences with him.

Grandsons make their red-carpet debut

Family support is a key aspect of Winkler’s life, and recently, two of his grandsons joined him in the limelight at the Los Angeles premiere of his film Normal on April 15, 2026.

The occasion turned into a significant milestone, as the two red-headed boys enjoyed “their first” experience on the red carpet.

When asked by People why the boys attended the premiere, Winkler responded: “Well, you know what? To support their grandfather, Papa. To support Papa.”

The actor also noted that not all of his grandchildren could make it, as some had school commitments keeping them at home.

“They are amazing. There are four girls, ages 1, 4, 13, and 16,” Winkler shared, adding, “They’re at home. Too much homework.”
