A young deckhand, new to a fishing boat showcased on Deadliest Catch, has sadly passed away following an incident that took place at sea.
Friends, family, colleagues, and fans are grieving the loss of 25-year-old Todd Meadows.
Deadliest Catch has become a staple of television, having been on air since 2005. Anyone who has watched the series understands that those who work on these vessels are some of the toughest people you will ever encounter.
They venture away from the safety of land, never entirely sure they will make it back, plunging into some of the most perilous waters on Earth. Each journey is a risk against the elements, fatigue, and sheer misfortune. Long hours, harsh weather, freezing seas, and unyielding physical work are part of the daily routine on these boats — and when things go awry, the outcomes can be deadly.
Sadly, this harsh reality became painfully evident on February 25.
At only 25 years old, Todd Meadows — one of the latest crew members featured on Deadliest Catch — lost his life while filming the enduring series, tragically ending a young life in one of the most hazardous jobs in the world.

Meadows was serving as a deckhand on the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady during the filming of the show’s upcoming 22nd season in the Bering Sea of Alaska.
While no official cause of death has been revealed, TMZ has reported that Meadows passed away in an incident related to fishing while on set.
Captain Rick Shelford confirmed the tragic news in a heartfelt Facebook post shared on Monday, March 2, calling it “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady.” Production on the series has since concluded, as filming was close to completion at the time of Meadows’ death.
“We lost our brother, Todd Meadows,” Shelford expressed.
“Todd was the newest addition to our crew, and he quickly became part of our family. His passion for fishing and his strong work ethic earned him everyone’s respect immediately. His infectious smile and the sound of his laughter echoing up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer are memories we will cherish forever.”
Shelford also shared thoughts on Meadows’ life beyond the boat, mentioning that he is survived by a wife and three children who were his everything.
“He worked diligently, loved profoundly, and spread joy to those around him,” the captain added. “At this moment, our hearts are shattered in a way that words cannot adequately convey.
We kindly ask that you keep Todd’s children and family in your prayers and thoughts as they navigate the days ahead without him.

Todd will always be a part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Although we lost him much too early, his legacy will continue through his children and in every memory we hold of him.
Rest easy, brother, until we meet again.
A representative from Discovery Channel also released a statement offering condolences:
“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of Todd Meadows. This is an immense loss, and our thoughts are with his family, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly challenging time.”
In the wake of his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Meadows’ family and assist with funeral costs. The fundraiser portrays him as a dedicated young father who worked on the water to provide for his three sons.
“We are heartbroken to announce the unexpected passing of Todd Morgan Meadows, a cherished 25-year-old father, son, brother, and friend, who left us far too soon while pursuing his passion — crabbing in Alaskan waters,” the page states.
“He was a devoted dad to three wonderful little boys who meant the world to him. Everything he did was for them — their happiness, their futures, and the memories they will cherish.”
The fundraiser aims to raise $16,000 to help the family during this trying time.

Unfortunately, Meadows is not the first cast member from Deadliest Catch to pass away in recent years. The series has also lost several notable individuals, such as Phil Harris, who was a captain and co-owner of the Cornelia Marie; Justin Tennison, who served on the Time Bandit; and former captain Tony Lara.
In June 2024, veteran deckhand Nick Marvar died at the age of 59 following what was termed a “medical emergency.” In 2020, deck boss Nick McGlashan passed away at just 33 years old. In May 2018, former captain Blake Painter was discovered deceased in his home in Astoria, Oregon, at the age of 38.
Each of these losses serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers of life on the Bering Sea. Rest in peace, Todd!
