This star was every woman’s dream in the ’90s – what happened to him years later

He was the quintessential heartthrob of the 1980s and 1990s, known for his stylish hair, toned physique, and piercing gaze. Yet, after gracing the covers of romance novels, Fabio Lanzoni seemed to vanish. Here’s the story behind it.

During the late 1980s and 1990s, one man captured the hearts of countless women globally. His flowing locks, chiseled features, and athletic build adorned numerous romance novel covers.

Women envisioned him as the ideal romantic hero in their favorite tales. Surprisingly, this man was initially unaware of his fame.

That man was Fabio Lanzoni. His image was ubiquitous — found on books in stores, supermarkets, and even in people’s homes. Readers gazed at the covers, conjuring up thrilling love stories before diving into the actual text.

For approximately a year and a half, Fabio engaged in modeling for photo shoots. However, he was oblivious to the fact that his images were being featured on romance novels. Everything changed one fateful night in Miami.

Three girls approached me and exclaimed, ‘Oh my God. You look just like the guy from our books.’” Fabio shared on People Magazine’s podcast, People’s in the 90’s.

Initially, Fabio thought they were flirting with him. He humorously responded:

“Honey, that’s a fantastic pick-up line,” Fabio said, but the women were being sincere.

They insisted, “No, no. Seriously, it’s not a pick-up line. You look exactly like the guy from my books.”

Fabio Lanzoni was puzzled. He mentioned that he had no clue what they were talking about. He believed the photos were just ordinary pictures and didn’t know where they were used.

One of the women decided to demonstrate.

“I live about 20 minutes from the club. I’m going to go home, grab all my books, and come back to show you that I’m not lying,” one woman declared.

She eventually returned with the books, and Fabio was astonished. After glancing at the covers in disbelief, he exclaimed, “Oh my God, that’s me.

He came to the realization that he had become quite a famous individual. His image graced the covers of romance novels, and this became the focus of his life’s work.

A significant breakthrough in America

Fabio Lanzoni was born on March 15, 1959, in Milan, Italy, where he initially worked as a fashion model in Europe. He also had a stint in the Italian army, but his ambition to pursue modeling was not well-received by everyone back home.

His father was not in favor of his modeling aspirations, advising him, “You don’t want to be a mannequin.

However, Fabio was meant to forge his own path. He persisted in his modeling career and made the decision to relocate to the US to achieve success. He quickly became a familiar face in the modeling scene and, in 1993, he graced the cover of People Magazine.

By that time, his father had a change of heart regarding his son’s career.

“For the first time in my life, my father told me, ‘Fabio, I’m wrong.’ My father was never one to admit he was wrong, so it was hard to believe when he said, ‘You really made it, I’m very proud of you. I was wrong and you were right.’ He expressed, ‘I’m so proud of you. You made it.’ To me, that was the greatest reward,” Fabio Lanzoni shared with People in 2024.

In addition to his modeling career, Fabio’s work on novel covers significantly contributed to his income. He graced over 1,300 romance novel covers, establishing himself as one of the most recognizable faces in the industry, if not the most famous.

What made these covers so appealing? The model himself has a theory.

“When you read the book, you really have your own fantasy,” he explained. “Globally, there are countless women who feel dissatisfied with their relationships and lives. They seek an escape from their reality, and these covers provide that escape.”

Fabio’s popularity also opened doors to the film industry. He featured in movies like Dude, Where’s My Car?, Spy Hard, and Death Becomes Her, along with appearances on shows such as Step by Step and Guiding Light, often portraying himself.

Even today, Fabio’s name is widely recognized online. Social media users continue to admire his striking looks.

“Man, this guy seems respectful, well-grounded, down-to-earth, genuine nice guy,” one commenter noted on YouTube.

“Can’t believe he’s still big and has the same hair,” another remarked.

Others complimented his appearance, noting that he still looks fantastic.

“He still looks good for his age,” one user commented, while another enthused, “Wow, still fine. Love his voice.”

Although many people admire Fabio Lanzoni for his appearance today, aging is a natural process. Consequently, some individuals are not particularly thrilled with how he looks now.

“What was attractive in his youth doesn’t seem appealing anymore…sorry, a shorter hairstyle would suit him better,” one commenter expressed.

Another remarked, “The long hair doesn’t have the same charm anymore, but if he enjoys it, that’s his choice,” while a third person stated, “I don’t understand the appeal that others mention.”

So, what is Fabio up to these days? At 66 years old, he is leading a peaceful life, concentrating on his health and fitness. He has also experienced sorrow with the loss of his sister to cancer, which has turned him into a strong advocate for cancer research.

“I have the most beautiful life, I am healthy, I am in good shape, I eat well, I work out every day,” he shared in 2025.

Though he has never been married, the model has previously confessed that some of his past loves ‘slipped away.’

“There is quantity, but I seek quality,” Fabio concluded. “You see, when you truly love someone, it lasts forever.”
