Beloved ‘Star Wars’ Actor Dies at 84 After Long Illness

Richard Donat, the Canadian actor widely recognized by Star Wars enthusiasts as the voice of Deej Warrick in the Ewoks animated series, has passed away at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness.

Enjoying a career that spanned decades across stage, cinema, and television, Donat died on March 28 after being treated at South Shore Regional Hospital.

In a heartfelt obituary, his family described him as a “passionate gardener, a loving and supportive partner, a devoted father, and an extremely proud grandfather of Charlize, Nadia, Mira, and Taran.” The tribute continued, “He will be missed but his presence will always be with us. He was a good man.”

Brought into the world on June 1, 1941, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Donat discovered a love for the performing arts at a young age. Throughout his life, he gained acclaim for his adaptability and intense commitment to his profession, taking on diverse characters across both theater and film.

He established a formidable legacy within the Canadian theater scene, distinguishing himself not only as a performer but also as a director. On the screen, Donat was featured in numerous film and television projects across Canada and the US. To the general public, he was perhaps most recognizable for playing Vince Teagues in the popular TV show Haven.

“I have always lived here, and then this show comes along, and suddenly your life is changed,” he shared in a 2012 interview with Media Mikes. “It is quite extraordinary, really.”

Furthermore, he provided the voice for an Ewok in the 1980s animated program Star Wars: Ewoks, a series chronicling the escapades of Wicket and his companions on the forest moon of Endor. The ABC show aired for two seasons before its conclusion.

Over the course of his acting journey, he frequently took on the roles of thoughtful and commanding figures, making a memorable mark in both leading and supporting parts.

Theatrical talent was clearly a family trait. Richard was the sibling of soap opera actor Peter Donat, as well as the nephew of the distinguished British performer Robert Donat, who took home an Academy Award in the 1940s.

Today, Richard is celebrated for his remarkable skill, unwavering professionalism, and enduring influence on both the stage and screen. His profound impact on viewers and his peers will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
