That’s exactly the situation with a flashy $20 million mansion located at the summit of Kingfisher Towers in Bengaluru, India, towering over the city’s sprawling slums below.
Built within the upscale UB City area, this lavish home couldn’t be more different from the everyday lives of those residing 400 feet beneath it.
So, what exactly does this opulent property include?
The sky-high residence boasts lush private gardens, an infinity pool, a helipad, and a massive deck but its unique location has stirred up plenty of controversy.
Irfan Razack, chairman of Prestige Estates Projects – one of the developers behind the tower’s construction described the challenges involved: “It was a challenge to construct the mansion on a huge cantilever at that height, but we have ensured we build it exactly the way it was conceived. It’s a complex structure and the finishing work is going on.”
“We will finish the project as per contract and hand it over.”
In fact, many believe Mallya may never set foot in his high-rise palace at all.
Indian officials continue their push to extradite Mallya, who first made his fortune with Kingfisher beer and later expanded into other ventures.
In 2023, Tom Tugendhat, then serving as the UK’s security minister, commented on Mallya’s extradition case, reaffirming that the UK does not intend to be a safe haven for fugitives.
Speaking to PTI, Tugendhat stated: “We both [the UK and India] have legal processes that must be gone through. But the UK government is absolutely clear, we have no intention of becoming a place where those who are seeking to evade justice can hide.”
It remains a mystery as to when, or even if, anyone will eventually move into the towering residence.
