New Video Emerges: Loyal Dog Guards Wife’s Body in Tragic Gene Hackman Death Case

Police have recently released body camera footage from the investigation into the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife. The video shows officers inside the couple’s New Mexico home, where they eventually located the bodies of both Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as well as one of their dogs lying beside Betsy.

The footage, obtained by TMZ on Tuesday, captures authorities combing through the Santa Fe property in search of Gene and Betsy.

The first discovery is Betsy’s body, found lying near a closed door that led outside. One of the couple’s dogs was beside her. Shortly afterward, officers came upon Gene’s body, located near the kitchen area.

Another dog was found dead inside a crate, where it had apparently been left during a veterinary visit.

The footage also reveals the state of disarray within the house. Calling the home unkempt would be an understatement.

An environmental inspection carried out by the New Mexico Department of Public Health later confirmed the property was infested with rats. Inspectors reported finding deceased rodents and nests scattered across eight separate outbuildings on the premises.

Betsy Arakawa reportedly died on February 12 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, while Gene Hackman passed away several days later, around February 17 or 18, due to a combination of heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s.
