For what is believed to have been the better part of a decade, a dog paced back and forth all alone on the rooftop of a building in Mexico City. Provided with the scantest of necessities of life by his neglectful caretakers, the poor pup managed to survive for all those years — but his body reflected the grimmest of realities.
No one really loved him.
The dog’s frail frame had become buried by long, heavy layers of matted fur, making him appear to be little more than a sad, amorphous shape.

According to reports, neighbors who could see the poor pup languishing on the rooftop filed numerous complaints with local officials over the years, but it did little to save the dog from that sad situation. Eventually, one family reached out to Seres Libres A.C., an animal rescue organization, for help instead.
Speaking with the dog’s owners, rescuers succeeded in convincing them to surrender him.
He was finally free of the rooftop — but a bigger transformation was still to come.

Despite the dog’s sorry condition and long-term suffering, his spirit remained remarkably strong. It seemed as though he’d never given up hope that life beyond the rooftop was possible.
For that reason, his rescuers gave him a new name — Soñador (Spanish for Dreamer)
Volunteers from Seres Libres A.C. then took Soñador to a veterinary clinic for an evaluation — and to liberate him from the matted fur that encased him.
His rescuers documented the beginning of their involvement in the clip below, leading up to Soñador’s incredible transformation:
@sereslibres__mxEL ANTES Y DESPUÉS DE SOÑADOR, LA TRANSFORMACIÓN MÁS ESPERADA. ❤️🩹 Soñador era un perrito que solo soñaba con algún día bajar de esa azotea y conocer el mundo, hoy esta comunidad le cumplió su sueño. 🥹 Este rescate se llevó a cabo en plena CDMX en la GAM, es inaudito que hayan tenido a este pobre angelito ahí abandonado en el techo por más de 10 años… ♬ sonido original – •Seres Libres – Rescate Animal
At long last, the poor dog was finally free — losing over 10 pounds of matted hair thanks to that trimming.
And he couldn’t have been happier.

“He smiles every time he wags his tail,” Renata, president of Seres Libres A.C., told The Dodo. “He has a lot of joy and he’s willing to to live again.”
Being a senior dog, Soñador faces some continued health challenges, for which he’s being treated. But his spirit remains strong, nevertheless.
“He wants to know the world,” Renata said. “His attitude is amazing.”

Now, Soñador’s rescuers are working to ensure that his dreams really do come true.
“He spent 10 years in those horrible conditions, and he likely has just a few years of life left. But, well, we’re going to make the best out of them,” Renata said. “He already has some people who are willing to adopt him. So, we’re sure that he’s going to live a very happy life and he’s going to have that happy ending.”
