Such is the story of one dog who, after finding her loving forever home, has become famous as “The Happiest Dog in the World” thanks to her incredibly bright smile.
Meet Shortcake.
Her wide, joyful grin is not a trick of the camera; it’s a genuine expression that she’s had ever since her owner, Amy Matsushima, rescued her.
“When she’s not napping, she’s quite playful and full of quirky sounds, yet even then, she keeps smiling,” Amy shared with the Daily Mail, adding that Shortcake smiles most of the time.
But life wasn’t always this cheerful for Shortcake. She began as a stray on the streets of Fresno, California, facing significant health challenges.
“Shortcake was found with severe mange and a hernia,” Amy explained to the Daily Mail. “Her time at the shelter was almost over when Fresno Bully Rescue found out about her.”
Amy noted that those who knew her then said she had a strong smell from the mange.
Despite her rough start, when Amy saw Shortcake’s picture online, she was immediately moved by the dog’s upbeat nature.
“Though she looked in bad shape, she was wagging her tail and smiling, and it struck a chord with me,” Amy told Good Morning America. “I just knew I had to meet her.”
After their first meeting, Amy was determined to adopt Shortcake. Fortunately, the dog recovered swiftly from her mange. Now, Shortcake is a happy, healthy dog who enjoys playing and relaxing at home, with her joy clearly reflected in her smiles.
Amy remains puzzled by Shortcake’s constant grinning. “I don’t know why she smiles so much,” she told GMA, finding amusement in how it’s not something Shortcake does on command.
