Stomach Bug Sickens Over 140 People on Caribbean Cruise, Forcing Passengers and Crew to Isolate in Cabins

A Caribbean cruise that promised sun-soaked beaches and ocean views turned into a week of illness and isolation for over 140 people. What started as a relaxing tropical voyage from Los Angeles to Mexico ended in nausea, stomach cramps, and concern as a fast-moving stomach virus swept through the ship. Passengers expecting margaritas and poolside fun found themselves quarantined in cabins instead.

Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas set sail on July 4, 2025, with over 5,000 people on board. By the time the ship returned to Los Angeles on July 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that more than 140 passengers and crew had fallen ill with gastrointestinal symptoms. For many, the experience aboard this Caribbean cruise ship became a lesson in how quickly sickness can derail even the best-planned vacations.

As word of the outbreak spread, health officials stepped in, the cruise line scrambled to contain the illness, and passengers demanded answers. Here is how the situation unfolded and what travelers should know before booking their next sea-bound adventure.

The Outbreak Hits Hard and Fast

Soon after departing Los Angeles, passengers began reporting symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramps. By the end of the trip, 134 passengers and 7 crew members had fallen ill, according to the CDC. Although officials have not yet identified the cause, the symptoms strongly suggest norovirus, a common threat on cruise ship vacations.

Rather than wait, Royal Caribbean responded quickly. Medical staff immediately isolated sick individuals in their cabins. At the same time, the crew ramped up cleaning efforts across the ship. They disinfected high-touch surfaces such as railings, restrooms, elevators, and buffet stations. Meanwhile, the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program monitored the response and collected stool samples for testing.

Despite these efforts, frustration grew among passengers. Many felt blindsided, with little information shared during the early stages of the outbreak. Others questioned how such a widespread illness could occur on a luxury Caribbean cruise with strict hygiene policies.
