Millionaire Hunter Gored To Death By 2,800-Pound Buffalo During $10,000 Safari

A trophy hunter tragically lost his life after the animal he was following turned on him and charged with brutal force.

The safari company Coenraad Vermaak Safaris confirmed that 52-year-old Asher Watkins had been tracking a buffalo when the creature fatally wounded him during the hunt.

They released a statement saying: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA.”

“On Sunday, while on a hunting safari with us in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.”

“He was tracking it together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers. This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his loved ones.”

“We are doing everything we can to support the family members who are here with us and those back in the United States as they navigate this tragic loss.”

According to The Sun, Asher Watkins, who was visiting from the U.S., had already hunted and killed a waterbuck on the first day of his South African safari. The following day, he set his sights on a massive Cape Buffalo that reportedly weighed nearly 2,800 pounds.

Unfortunately, the animal he was pursuing didn’t run. Instead, it turned around and charged at full speed, crashing into Watkins and ending his life in an instant. What was meant to be a trophy hunt quickly turned into a deadly encounter.

National Geographic notes that Cape Buffalo can reach speeds up to 37 miles per hour. Combine that with their bulk, and it’s no wonder they’re among the most dangerous animals in South Africa. These animals are believed to be responsible for about 200 human deaths per year.

Watkins’ former wife, Courtney, and their daughter have been notified about the incident. Courtney shared on social media that they’ve been “in a state of shock and heartbreak ever since” learning of Asher’s passing.

Aside from hunting, Asher made his wealth by operating a business that dealt in high-end ranch properties — some reportedly valued at up to $38 million. The Sun also reported that the hunting trip itself cost around $10,000.

The website for the safari company mentions that Cape Buffalo are considered the most dangerous of all their huntable animals. The site even highlights that this specific species has a reputation for being especially aggressive and unpredictable.

In the world of big game hunting, the possibility of death is a known risk. Hunters are well aware that sometimes, the animals being tracked can suddenly become the hunters themselves.

Experts from the safari say these animals are capable of launching surprise attacks without any warning. While this unpredictability is deadly, the company describes it as making the experience even more “thrilling and exhilarating.”
