A grieving mother, Samantha Jensen, has shared her heartbreak nearly three years after the tragic death of her three-year-old daughter, Scarlett. She revealed the devastating story behind the final photo ever taken of her little girl, captured just moments before her life was cut short.
On October 7, 2022, Samantha and her husband attended a wedding while their children, Scarlett and her younger brother Henry, stayed with their grandmother, Jamie, in Oldtown, Idaho. That afternoon, Jamie took the kids for ice cream and a walk before heading home.
When they arrived back at the family’s driveway, Scarlett asked to get out of her stroller to pick flowers. Jamie snapped a picture of the smiling little girl surrounded by nature—a photo Samantha later discovered to be the very last image of her daughter alive.
Moments later, tragedy struck. A Chevy Tahoe came racing down the driveway, striking Jamie and the children. Despite her desperate attempts to protect them, Scarlett was killed almost instantly, while Henry and Jamie sustained critical injuries.
The driver fled the scene on foot but was caught a few miles away. He was later sentenced to 10 years in prison for his actions. Samantha said her family’s world shattered that day.
Henry was airlifted to a children’s hospital, where doctors treated him for a fractured spine, six broken ribs, a broken jaw, a broken collarbone, and internal injuries. He spent a week in the PICU and wore a full body brace for ten weeks. Jamie also suffered multiple broken bones but eventually recovered enough to go home.
Weeks later, Samantha found her mother’s lost phone. Looking through its photos, she came across Scarlett’s final picture, timestamped just five minutes before her official time of death.
Though painful at first, Samantha now treasures the photo. To her, it captures Scarlett’s last peaceful moments—happy, carefree, and surrounded by love. “I am so incredibly thankful to have that photo,” she shared.
